Still Frustrated – Spurs Need League Wins!
By: Richard | October 12th, 2007
I don’t even know where to begin. I had planned to pen a blog on Monday following what was really an impressive showing by Spurs, one they should and could have won by all accounts.
I was so impressed by our midfield during the game. Jenas played pretty well, as did Tianio (still unsure as to why Steed was brought in, but whatever). Bale looked great, as always, and Zokora was fantastic in my estimation. If we could get that type of hard tackling play out of Didier on a regular basis we could see our recent form of league draws quickly turn into league wins. It would be a massive relief to see some constant tackling from the central midfield.
Robinson stunk again. Nice work on that first goal Paul. Great hands. Also, nice continued work on any crossing passes. You do a great job defending those.
Anyway, perhaps I’m getting too much into Serie A and Italian Calcio tradition in general and transferring those sensibilities to my English football watching but did just a slew of calls late in the second half just mysteriously go the way of Liverpool or am I high? When Reina came way the hell out of the box to defend Bale it seemed to me that A. there was no need to blow the whistle and B. if there was, how the hell did it become a free kick to Liverpool when Reina initiated the contact? There were also a few throw ins that went the Red’s way that just seemed ridiculous. Anyway, that brings me to my point: Were the refs doing all they could to insure Liverpool had every opportunity to walk away with a point? I just can’t see it any other way.
Did you see Mascherano’s major flop at the edge of the area when he made contact with Kaboul? If he wasn’t fishing for a penalty I don’t know what he was doing… Kaboul seemed to give him a few choice words after that. I hope it was along the lines of “if you get a cheap penalty I’m going to be waiting for you after the match and it won’t be to congratulate you on your brilliant acting job.” It just gets me sick to see how the game got so predicable, at the end it just seemed unnatural to me.
Anyway, Spurs are looking better and I can’t help but look at games like this one and the Sunderland fixture and think where we could be if not for some rough luck yet the season is still young and Spurs still have the talent to make a major move up the table in short order.
Our UEFA cup draw looks good enough to get us to the knock out stages without too much trouble as we’ve been lumped in with Getafe, Anderlecht, Hapoel Tel-Aviv and Aalborg BK. We start with Getafe at the lane on the 25th of this month then to Isreal on the 8th of November to play Hapoel then back to the Lane to play Aalborg November 29. Then Spurs travel to Belgium on the 5th or 6th of December to play what should be quite an interesting game versus our old adversary Anderlecht. This could be either a must win or irrelivant depending on the previous results….
