The Rumour Mill
By: Jay | June 27th, 2007Whilst we’re all waiting (the horrendous waiting, week after week after week) for the new season, we might as well mull over some outside bets for players with the words ‘Tottenham Hotspur’ and ‘Transfer’ near their name.
We’ve been linked with Alan Smith. What can I say, do we need another Mido? Do we even need 1 Mido? I can say, with reasonable certainty, that Mr.Smith will not coming near N17. If he does you can shun me and call me a Gooner (ouch!). Another player we have been linked with is the young Curtis Davies of West Brom. He’s a good, young and promising central defender who has already had one transfer request turned down, and looks to be trying again. There are other Premiership clubs interested, and he wouldn’t be cheap. I mention this because a deal for Kaboul is still not yet confirmed.
Previous links with Stuart Downing of Middlesborough have cooled, but the chances are the longer the gaping hole in the left-side of midfield is left untouched, the more his name will be popping up. Personally, my opinion of him has improved to the level of satisfactory; I think we should look elsewhere.
Other names are Christian Wilhelmsson, Julien Faubert, Marlon Harewood (dear God no, please no) and, recently, a chap called Chinedu Ogbuke. He’s a striker who’s currently plying his trade for Lyn Oslo in Norway. ‘Edu’, as he is known, had trials with Portsmouth at the back end of last season but fears over a work permit halted any deal. Recently, scouts from Spurs, Arsenal and Celtic have been to Norway to watch him play. It would be interesting to get some views from Lyn fans as to his ability, due to the fact my knowledge on the Norweigan league is about as extensive as my knowledge on the effects of climate change on new-born giraffes.
More rumours as they come….

i’d much rather have kaboul… sure I’ve never seen him play, but he’s gotta be better than curtis davies. French people same to rate him highly anyway (and they’re notoriously reliable, right?). At the very least, maybe he’d give Silent Steed someone to talk to.
The best thing to be said about Alan Smith is that he’s a sparkplug.. exactly the kind of guy spurs need on the field when we’ve taken an early lead, and decide we’d rather sit around and pick daisies. He never stops running and that’s the kind of attitude we need to lift the rest of the team when we think defending a 1 goal lead is a good idea..
In that mould, I’d love to see Stephen Hunt on the left wing. He’s got some technical ability, decent crosser, and like smith.. hustles like nobody’s business. I’d much rather see someone who’s not as technically gifted as MGP but who will work his ass off for the team, because that’s something we certainly lack at times.
so, for 2-3 million, and maybe another 3 on kewell (injury problems or not, he’s a steal at that price if he can stay remotely fit and we have adequate cover)
i’d really rather not see downing or The Big Clogger Harewood…i’m pretty sure faubert and wilhelmsson are both right-sided

you forgot about France Under-21 defender Younes Kaboul who is to sign for Tottenham and could join them in the next couple of days, according to his agent.
