Realistic Transfer Targets
By: Jay | June 25th, 2007Who are the Spurs realistically in the hunt to sign?
I heard someone shouting for Mr Drenthe, who had a terrific u21 Championship. Frankly, I drool at the prospect of him and G.Bale destroying teams down the left-hand side, however I imagine there are a plethora of teams scurrying to contact his agent. Additionally, I lean towards the need to of a seriously proven player to add some sheer class and experience to the side.
1. Darren Bent - Clinical finisher, good in the air, seems to want to play for us, English. Seems a done deal although I hear Charlton are holding out for yet more cash. Will eventually play for England like every other English player we buy. How great is that?
2. Martin Petrov - Serious speed merchant, left footed midfielder, and a pal of D.Berbatov.
3. Kim Kallstrom - Swedish attacking midfielder, seems decent.
4. Younes Kaboul - Central Defender, currently plying his trade for Auxerre. Strong and powerful.
There are others I’ve heard around, such as Wesley Sneijder, who is a class act. Isn’t there an argument to poach Shaun Wright-Phillips? Undoubted talent, and although predominantly right-footed could certainly do a job on the left. Just look at Joe Cole. What about Stuart Downing? Hmm, that’s an interesting one. A proper left-winger and looks decent; it’s a tough one.
Our fringe players include Danny Murphy, Lee Young-Pyo (surely he can’t stay much longer) and the slightly comical Egyption duo of Mido and Hossam Ghaly. If Bent does arrive I think I speak for everyone when I say “Sorry Mido, erm, theres this team…. in … erm, Belgium who you might want to join because, well… you get the picture. Cheers anyway.” Well, we’d rather have Jermain Defoe (he’s Yiddo).
We still have a room in the Lane probably stacked with money left over from the Carrick transfer, not to mention the fact we earned about 30m for finishing 5th in the league due to a shiny new Television deal with the Premier League. What shall we do with it all? And what should we expect in terms of a new ground for Tottingham? Revamp WHL, Wembley or move to a new ground. Personally, I feel the roots of Tottenham Hotspur are buried deep in the hallowed turf on White Hart Lane. Such tradition, it gives me goose bumps when I see the silky, green grass. I hope the boys in the boardroom can come up with a solution to the effect that we stay at the Lane, with around 50, 000 fans shouting ‘COME ON YOU SPUUUUUURRRSSSSSS’.

You dont have a chance to get Kallstrom and have fun over paying for second rate talent like Darrent Bent and Stuart Downing.

good effort on the post Corey, but you obviously know little. Darren Bent is a proven goalscorer. Proven. As in: “you’ve proven yourself to know very little”.

Bent deal seems done and dusted at this point, and I for one am thrilled. He offers a lot of different combinations for our attack as he can be paired with any one of berba keane and defoe… and he’ll be nice to have around if berba decides to pack his bags after one more season.
i like lee, and he can provide cover at both right and left back, so he’ll be a useful squad player next season. any idea what the hang up on the kaboul deal is? it’s been in the works for ages now..
petrov, kallstrom, drenthe (hopefully), faubert, downing (god no) and the myriad other wingers we’ve been linked with is typical, but it’s worrying that this seems to be their lowest priority this summer when it’s the biggest hole in the team. i sincerely hope jol doesn’t decide to just stick bale in midfield and continue with lee and bae at left back..
i hope sneijder shows up, but it doesn’t look likely at this point… and we really need to see a few more players heading through the exit door *coughmidocough* sooner rather than later.

Darren Bent is not worth that pricetag. Sorry, I don’t care how many goals he’s scored in the EPL, it’s because of prices like that which inflate the market. People blame Chelsea for this inflation, but it’s the league as a whole that adds to the hype. Bent has no European experience, plays for a crap team, and is not a proven international. If Spurs tried to look beyond the EPL, they could find similarly talented players with half the pricetag.
And Kallstrom is not a realistic target for you guys at the moment. You should have gotten him when he was at Rennes, but now he’s out of your reach.
Petrov and Kaboul are good buys though.

Another player I forgot to mention was Mortem Gamst Pederson. Although I can practically hear the laughter as I think he quite enjoys himself at Blackburn; Mark Hughes and Benni McCarthy the main reasons. However, imagine Chelski poach Benni and I hear Man City, if they don’t get Sven Goran as the new manager, are lining up Mark Hughes, who could be tempted(big stadium, lots of money). Then Gamst might have a change of heart.

Thanks for the backup Inara, you have said what i was prepared to say. Bent has nothing other then a bunch of penalties and goals for relegation foder for two years. No international experience or goals, no Champs League or UEFA experience… how does this merit the price? I just wonder how EPL teams evaluate talent to get these figures, because Darrent Bent is not anything near Florent Malouda, i dont even need to list his credentials, they are more impressive then Bents and Florent almost scored as many as Bent from the wing last year! (Lyonnais stick together Inara)

It’s interesting to know that the additional money the EPL gets from their rich broadcasting deal doesn’t automatically buy them better players but instead just makes the existing ones more expensive and more demanding (salary wise). Best example for this price inflation for me is still the transfer of Robert Huth from Chelsea to Middlesbrough. EPL to EPL transfer for €9m. Same transfer window: Bremen buys Per Mertesacker from Hannover for about €4,7m. Roughly half of Huth’s price tag. Both are 22 years old/defenders, Huth once played for the national team, Mertesacker still does, Huth sat on the bench, Mertesacker is booked for the starting XI.
So probably EPL clubs should better look for players in foreign leagues to get a better deal. Although I bet that those clubs will also start to overprice their players to get a piece of the EPL TV deal.

Jan makes a good point although I’m not sure the Huth example is great. Robert Huth is a good defender, and I think the reason why English clubs pay more is: yes, the Premier League has more money, but also that English league has a different playing atmosphere than other continental leagues, and a good player with experience in this league is worth their weight in gold. There is a long list of foreign players who have come to England and completely failed to make the grade. Expect more this season in England. Recent Middlesborough signing Sanli Tuncay comes to mind…

I’m through with the Bent talk. Let’s move on…. MARTIN PETROV! A left footed winger who could not only fill a need but perhaps further entrench Berbatov as a long time fixture at the Lane. That’s a win/win scenario to me. Add a center half and we look solid all the way round…. I’m hoping we fix the holes before retooling any of our strengths (striker)

Jay, well it’s just that Huth won’t challenge Mertesacker for his place in the German national team anytime soon and I felt that Mertesacker should rather be worth twice of what Huth is worth and not the other way round. Anyway, probably you are right and Huth’s style actually fits well with the English game.

i’m still firmly in the bent camp. he’s only 23, and has done wonders carrying a shit team like charlton. there’s no reason to assume he won’t do better at spurs. now that henry has gone for 16 mil, i’d be surprised if bent’s valuation didn’t come down. there’s no way they can justifiably set the same price tag… 12-14 and i’m happy.
jay’s got it spot on. the last thing we need is another rebrov.
