Pompey’s Muntari Spurs bound?

By: Gary | May 25th, 2008

Postmouth midfielder linked to SpursOpening the Sunday newspapers this morning to see again the transfer speculation was rife surrounding White Hart Lane.

The latest name to be banded around as possible Tottenham Hotspur suitor by the tabloids is Portsmouth central midfielder Sulley Muntari. It is reported the Ghanaian playmaker is valued at £14 million by Pompey boss Harry Redknapp. Is he having a laugh?

“Pompey now value him at double the fee after an outstanding debut season in England,” the Sunday People claimed. I fail to see what has been so outstanding about the African’s contribution to Portsmouth’s season. Maybe my opinion is misinformed but my view on the Premiership rookie does not concour.

He scored two stunners at Aston Villa, sure, but on the other occassions I have seen him in action, he has flattered to deceive to say the very. Perhaps I have just missed his better games, but even if I have I would not pay that kind of money for a therefore inconsistent performer.

And, if the Fratton Park side have been so impressed, maybe they should keep hold of him and deam the £7 million they paid for him last summer as a bargain.

I’d say a big ‘No’ for the signing of Muntari at that valuation.

The People reports Spurs chief Juande Ramos is eyeing up using wantaway centre-half Younes Kaboul plus cash to seal the deal. I would prefer to earn straight cash in the disposal in exchange for the services of the Frenchman.

And, after splashing £20 million on Luka Modric, I hardly feel an attacking central midfield player should be top of the Spaniard’s shopping list. But, maybe it isn’t. I hope anyway, that this deal, is just paper talk.

Elsewhere in the press today, former manager Martin Jol is apparently chasing the signature of Kevin-Prince Boeteng for his new Bundesliga side Hamburg. And, on that note I would like to take the chance to wish both MJ and ‘The Prince’ all the best for the future. Maybe, a meeting in the UEFA Cup next season would be a nice sentimental touch.

In other stories, with French custodian Coupet and Manchester City’s Joe Hart being linked with a move to the Lane over the last week, it has meant the potential deal for Cameroon keeper Carlos Kameni has gone rather quiet.

The Espanyol stopper has issued a ‘come and get me’ claim to Spurs it is reported, urging Ramos to trigger his £4.8 million sell-out clause in his contract.
With goalkeeper a definite arrival this summer, it looks as if we could be spoilt for choice with possible suitors.

The Whites are also supposed to be one of seven Premiership clubs in the race to sign Brazil midfielder Edu.

If the Sunday Mirror are confident the Valencia midfielder is set to move to England, they have certainly covered their options, claiming Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester City, Middlesbrough, Everton, Portsmouth and Liverpool are all in the hunt.

So, the rumour mill is heating up as usual and expect to develop with Euro 2008 on the horizon.

Who knows who will sign onto the ‘Ramos Revolution’ this summer, but I can say one thing for sure – Muntari for £14 million, No Thanks!

Why would Muntari leave Pompey for Tottenham?

I don’t understand what you lot can offer that we can’t.

    Uefa Cup…CHECK
    A domestic cup win…CHECK

Plus we’ve got Harry Redknapp. And the best fans in the Premiership. And a good squad. And money to spend. The list goes on.

And ‘5-1 we beat the scum (for the first time in 9 years)’- Portsmouth aren’t as you say ‘almost broke’. Our owner is filthy rich and willing to spend. So if you’re saying that Pompey are broke then so too are Chelsea.

Even Manchester Utd have huge debts to their name because of the Glazers. Arsnenal have big debts because of the amazing emirates stadium. Liverpool have adopted the debt of Hicks and Gillet aswell.

So if Pompey are ‘broke’ then so are the top four.

    PLAY UP POMPEY!!!

this article is with no disrespect to portsmouth, they have had a far more successful season than spurs, arguably on both league and cup fronts

this is just a reaction to newspaper rumours – i cannot understand why we would pay so much for muntari, a player i personally do not rate very highly

likewise, why would you be chasing a centre-back who cannot get a game with for a side lower in the division…

    time will tell

if you ask any resident of portsmouth where they would rather live id say about 90% would say london. thats one thing that we offer that pompey cannot. second, we have far better facilities. fratton park is one of the worst stadiums in the premier league, especially when compared to whl. actually, the lack of luxury boxes at fratton park is one of the main reasons for pompey’s cash problem. third, prestige. i dont have to explain that one, do i?

look, i do have respect for pompey… they certainly aren’t one of my hated teams. ive been to portsmouth, nice town, good fans, etc. even though it was more of a case of “right place, right time”, your fa cup win was impressive, and i must admit that i am jealous. but come on, it is far more prestigious to play for spurs than pompey… always has, always will be. like in the us, its far more prestigious to play for the los angeles dodgers than the milwaukee brewers, even though they have similar records and whatever.

14 mil for muntari is ridiculous, and pompey knows that. they arent stupid; they know they will have to come down from that price if they are truly willing to sell the player.

I’d take Portsmouth over London any day of the week.

Breathing in the sea air> Portsmouth
Breathing in the smell of dog shite> London

Beating Arsenal and Chelsea to win the Carling Cup – Spurs
Beating Cardiff City and Barnsley to win the FA Cup – Pompey
