What Next? Jol Out, Ramos In?
By: Richard | October 26th, 2007
I was forced to follow the first half of the Getafe game at work yesterday and as the half time whistle blew, the game at 1-1, I decided I would switch off the live game tracker and ignore the urge to check any football related websites until my work day was over so that I could go home and watch a recording of the game as if it were live… well, at least the second half that is. Once I was home and turned on the recording I found my DVR had recorded a bit of Sky Sports News and the first thing I read was the headline “Martin Jol Sacked”.
I had a read a spattering of rumors going up to game time yesterday that suggested the firing of Jol was a done deal and when my television screen confirmed it as such I have to admit, I felt sick. Let’s just say this: Martin Jol has done one hell of a job at Tottenham Hotspur… really, forget the past couple months. If the board had not needlessly undermined him right out of the gate things may well have been different. Two top five finishes in the past two years as well as three decent cup runs last term. That’s a far cry from the mid-table mediocrity that Spurs fans had come to expect in the Premiership.
Oddly enough yesterday’s performance against Getafe again highlighted the problems that Jol suffered through during the past few months. Spurs were unorganized at the back, coming forward and showing a tendency to attack first and defend second. Jol’s insertion of Jermaine Defoe into the starting eleven created a lot more offside calls then goals. How can Robbie Keane, who has been our best goal scoring threat, be sat in favor of Defoe? Honestly, end this drama and sell him off in January. Defoe isn’t doing anyone any good. It’s become a distraction having a player of his quality sitting on the bench.
Anyway, back to Marin Jol. At this point I look at his situation as such, he had support taken away from him by his superiors, this is true regardless of what Levy says, and it didn’t take long for the players to pull their support from the Dutchman as well. He was stuck right in the middle of a no win situation and became the scapegoat for mistakes that were beyond his control. Really, we should be happy for Martin Jol. He will do fine with another team but the situation at Tottenham Hotspur made it impossible.
So now Juande Ramos looms on the horizon, as does more spending on new players and, no doubt, the selling of current players. We’re all in for a wild ride and hopefully taking all 3 points against Blackburn will get us going in the right direction. Weather its Ramos or Clive Allen calling the shots remains to be seen.
So what do you think Spurs fans? Is this a turn for the worst of the right move at the right or wrong time? Let us know what you think! COYS!

Leeds announced Gus Poyet won’t be at the Millwall game tomorrow…. Spurs could be naming Ramos and Poyet as early as later today.

It looks like Clive will be in charge for the Blackburn game whatever happens. I’d love Ramos to come in. He’s a no-nonsense guy, who demands 100% from every player, and won’t stand for our defensive shambles. But he also plays with a lot of attacking flair. Watching Sevilla for the past two seasons was a delight, they were awesome. I think he could do OK, but I’m still sad that Jol has left. The next manager has got a decent yardstick to measure up to.
