UEFA Cup Update: Awaiting The Final Fixture

By: Sam | December 5th, 2008

After the two matches played in Group D during our bye round, which by the way were a big surprise win, 2-1 for NEC over Spartak in Russia, and 2-1 as well for Udinese over Dinamo, this is the deal. Udinese sit top with a perfect sheet of three wins from three matches, and we’re just below with six points. The three others are tied with a win apiece (there hasn’t been a draw in the eight matches that have been played), with Dinamo having played their four matches, so they’re done and done.

The fixtures, to be played on the 18th, will be as follows: NEC hosting Udinese and Spurs hosting Spartak.

Let’s go over the scenarios and what they entail. Remember, the first place finishers play the third place finishers, and the second place finishers get the Champions League leftovers.

1) Spurs win, Udinese win: Udinese 12, Spurs 9, NEC 3, Spartak 3, Dinamo 3
2) Spurs win, Udinese draw: Udinese 10, Spurs 9, NEC 4, Spartak 3, Dinamo 3
3) Spurs win, Udinese lose: Spurs 9, Udinese 9, NEC 6, Spartak 3, Dinamo 3
4) Spurs draw, Udinese win: Udinese 12, Spurs 7, Spartak 4, NEC 3, Dinamo 3
5) Spurs draw, Udinese draw: Udinese 10, Spurs 7, NEC 4, Spartak 4, Dinamo 3
6) Spurs draw, Udinese lose: Udinese 9, Spurs 7, NEC 6, Spartak 4, Dinamo 3
7) Spurs lose, Udinese win: Udinese 12, Spurs 6, Spartak 6, NEC 3, Dinamo 3
8) Spurs lose, Udinese draw: Udinese 10, Spurs 6, Spartak 6, NEC 4, Dinamo 3
9) Spurs lose, Udinese lose: Udinese 9, Spurs 6, NEC 6, Spartak 6, Dinamo 3
(As far as goal difference goes, we’ve got the definite edge over NEC and Spartak with +3 to their -1s, and if we scenario 3 were to happen, we would by default have the upper hand over Udinese)

It don’t take no genius to tell it looks like we’re headed for second place. Let’s see who’s in third place in the Champions League right now: Bordeaux, Anarthosis, Shaktar Donestk, Marseille, Aalborg, Fiorentia, Dinamo Kyiv, and Zenit. Not an excessively poor crop.

That’s that, a pretty objective post on my part. Predictions and thoughts are welcome. COYS

Ah, I guess I can’t write eight-bracket without producing a smiley face. Well, you get it.

i thought “why does sam want this scenario to happen for us? isn’t #3 the best?”

anyway, hopefully we can get a win… it shouldn’t be too hard considering the match is at WHL

it should be interesting to see what the spurs line up looks like for this next uefa cup tie. considering we’ll probably be putting our top out to fight with ManU. But as you said. were pretty much through to the next round regardless. lets hope its with another win.

So we’ve got Burnley in the semi. Thought about writing an article about it, but I’d rather just write the two sentences here instead. Actually, make that three.

Burnley won’t be an easy match, they’re on a roll right now having knocked out both chelski and the arse. Hopefully our boys won’t take it for granted and be playing in the final. I can’t see Derby doing anything against United so looks like it could be a Spurs-United final.
