Transfer Talk… yuk

By: Richard | January 14th, 2008

transfer.jpgWell, it’s been a couple weeks since my last post. You may ask yourself ‘Why so distant Richard? Where’s the love?’ Well, I’m back so let’s jump into the fray with some current transfer talk!

So, Lyon have accepted bids for Striker Fred from both Spurs and PSG and his fate should be decided by midweek. I’m assuming should Fred come to the Lane we’ll see the bidding war heat up for Defoe. The writing is on the wall and the diminutive forward could be moving on to one of a handful of English teams faster then he’s pushed off the ball by your standard defender. The more teams that want him the better in my opinion. Should teams like Villa, Pompy, Newcastle and Middlesbrough all have legitimate interest it’s not too far fetched to imagine the selling fee for Defoe eclipsing the potential buying price for Fred. How I would feel about this possible chain of events is a little unclear at the moment. Defoe would almost certainly end up playing for a team we are currently chasing and we all know how bitter a pill it is to swallow when one of our former players runs around the pitch sinking us months down the line. Of course Fred may or may not settle at Spurs bringing up the debate of knowing what we have versus the unknown commodity. Overall it seems like a good option as Spurs can’t promise Defoe first team football and his signing a new contract seems to be contingent upon that.

Stewart Downing is once again being linked to Spurs and although I do have opinions about this (don’t like it one bit) I’m going to hold those comments back for now. You see, what does bother me all the more is the players Spurs target players. It would seem Juande Ramos has identified Spurs defence and goalkeeping as the weak link of the team as it stands. Robinson has been sent to the bench, Chimbonda is rumored to go and we’re leaving teams with too much room to operate as well as leaking goals right and left on set pieces. So why the hell are we concentrating so much on forwards and midfielders during the window (with the exception of Alan Hutton of course)? During the summer Spurs did much the same, concentrating on defenders and forwards when everyone under the sun was hoping for a left sided player. Now as our defence has become a more pressing need we’re considering the merits of dumping 12 million pounds on a vastly overpriced winger? It’s just clear to me that Comolli/Levy’s habit of collecting overpriced and under producing young talent has gotten old. Even the rumors I’m reading during the window stink. Isn’t it about time Spurs dump a little cash on a proven player? Downing is nice and he could very well make Spurs go on the left but does that solve the obvious problems at the back?

Damn this has been a frustrating January. Let me know what you’re thinking Yids… at this rate we’ll be in for more of the same. COYS!

I’ll tell you what I’m thinking……you are spot on, 100% on the mark correct in everything said! I’ve heard the speculation round Jarque is just a smokescreen for who we’re really after…..I so hope to god Downing is too!

Yeah, the Jarque rumor was rubbished a bit earlier in the day so I left it out… I think a good result v Reading should help me forget all these dumb ass rumors…. COME ON YOU SPURS!
