TRANSFER SPECIAL
By: Jay | July 25th, 2007
With the final pieces of the elaborate Lillywhite jigsaw being nudged into place, this is THE comprehensive round-up of potential Tottenham transfers.
IN
Apparently, Kevin-Prince Boateng’s agent is talking to Tottenham about personal terms. It seems H.Berlin HAVE accepted the bid of between £4.5 - 5.7m (depending who you believe) and are uninterested in Sevilla’s second bid, which is still lower than ours. It is a bit worrying how it’s taking so long. According to the player he wants to play for us so why is sorting out a pay deal so difficult? Maybe I’m just getting a bit edgy. Anyway, I think I’m beginning to have second thoughts about it - I’d rather have someone more experienced in central midfield to raise performances of our other midfielders and to pull us through games like Edgar David’s did for us, even though it only lasted for about half a season. I wouldn’t be too fussed if it all fell through, all though if it didn’t I suppose I’d have to live with the fact we have one of the best creative, young midfielders that the Bundesliga has to offer.
Kieron Dyer. Big Sam Allardyce has admitted that Dyer could leave Newcastle United due to ‘personal reasons’. Hopefully his friendship with current Hotspur Jermain Jenas won’t mean he’s coming the The Lane. Anyway, I don’t think Jol would jeopardize his brilliant structuring of the squad to bring in a someone like Dyer. Anyway, Sky Sports suggest that West Ham would be more interested having lost Julien Faubert to a long term injury.
Martin Petrov is allegedly close to a move to the Lane. YES! Fantastic news for Spurs fans. If you don’t already know Petrov plays for Atletico Madrid in the coveted position of left wing. He is a bit of a speed merchant, with a good left foot, can deliver and score goals. Although I’m not too keyed up on his previous injury credentials, I’m aware he was injured for a lot of last season with a knee injury. However, the lure of UEFA Cup football and chum D.Berbatov has put Tottenham above Man City in his preferred destination list. He is 28 years of age, so plenty of experience, and is capped over 60 times for his country. A fee of around £6m is being branded around, which to me seems like a brilliant bit of business. That’s the same fee that Mido could leave for. Incredible.
Are you aware of the name Daniel Rose? I knew a Daniel Rose at school but it’s not him. Anyway, he’s 17 and he’s already signed for us for a fee of around £1m. He was a Leeds youth player before he quit the scholarship scheme and snubbed the lures of Everton, Arsenal and Liverpool. Sound familiar? If not, think: Aaron Lennon. Try not to get too excited, however hard it is. It would be criminal if we picked up 2 players of such class from Leeds youth scheme without anyone noticing. This is the thing about Jol’s young and English plan - it gives us an edge to sign others. I mean, Lennon took a pay cut to join us and when Rose sees how he flourished, and played in the World Cup (and enhanced his reputation further, unlike other players), the decision must have been made a lot easier. Here’s a little taster of what to expect. It’s not much, but all I could find…
Curtis Davies, the West Brom central defender is still trying to push through a transfer away from the club and into the Premiership. Spurs have been interested in Curtis, and Curtis in Spurs. Although so have other clubs, including Arsenal. At a current price of £9 - 10m, no one appears to fancy a move for him yet. The player himself is desperate for West Brom to lower their price. However, do we even need another central defender? We already have King, Dawson, Rocha, Kaboul and Gardner. Unless Jol is scared about King’s injury status and wants further backup, it seems unnnecessary. Although, I fear for Gardner’s future should he arrive. Having seen influential players like Koumas and Kamara leave for the Premiership, the current West Brom captain is unsure of the clubs intentions and you can’t blame him for seeing Spurs and holding onto some White Hart Hope. And with West Brom on the verge of signing another central defender, perhaps his Christmas will come early.
Mere rumours of future transfer include: Shaun Wright-Phillips, Nene and Mortem Gamst Pederson.
Players who won’t be arriving are Christian Wilhelmson (gone to Bolton) and Wesley Sneijder (staying with Ajax).
OUT
Mido and Ghaly. It is well documented that Mido has sealed a permanent transfer to Birmingham City, with Steve Bruce well chuffed about the whole deal. He has, however, begun pre-season training at Tottenham though, and I will feel a lot more relieved when he shakes Mr Bruce’s hand at the unveiling news conference, sitting next to Hossam Ghaly with any luck. Both players have ability, and it showed at times during their spells at the Lane but I’m afraid due to average performances, injuries and bad behaviour, it has come to an end. News on Ghaly’s transfer is hard to come by, but it seems he will be going to Birmingham too. Ex-Spur Stephen Kelly has already had his say on the signings. He states that Mido could be a handful, but that both players will improve the team. Who cares? With a combined fee of £9m coming our way we can can put it to far better use.
Other players who could be shown the door: Danny Murphy (if we get Boateng), Anthony Gardner (if we get Curtis Davies), Wayne Routledge (if Fulham want him, if we get a proper left winger).
Players who will not be leaving: Dimitar Berbatov (will hopefully sign new contract soon. Watch this space), Jermain Defoe (actually likes it at Tottenham), Pascal Chimbonda (hopefully).
Well there we have it. Apologies if I’ve left anyone out, which I probably have, but I try to ignore silly rumours such as the one about Freddy Adu. Anyway, we’ll see what happens in the remaining 5 weeks or so of the transfer window.
