Transfer Rumours- We Will Not Be Improving
By: Lucas | March 6th, 2007Now, because everything you see on the internet is true, I’ve compiled a list of intriguing (for a variety of reasons) players I’ve found to be linked with Spurs. I’m looking at these based on viability, the quality of the player, and the chances of it realistically happening.
Leighton Baines- Apparently, we’re going to try to use Pascal Chimbonda to try to lure him away from Wigan, assuming, of course, that they are relegated. I’m kind of undecided about Baines- it seems like he hasn’t made much noise aside from his spectacular free kick against Man U, and he hasn’t really seemed incredible on the one or two opportunities I’ve had to see him. Though it is unlikely, were he to come our way, and live up to his hype, we could have maybe the best, or certainly the most underrated, back four in the league, with Chimbonda and Baines bracketing Ledley King and the outstanding Michael Dawson.
Nigel Reo-Coker- No. Just no. The last thing a team that may lack character needs is the man who captains a team that will likely be relegated due, almost entirely, to (wait for it… wait for it…) lack of character. He can play when he feels like it, but this is the exact opposite type of player Spurs need. Likely, though, if the money was right and West Ham are relegated. Damn.
Ruben Gonzalez- Well, Manchester United want him, so he must be good. Right? Right? If he does come, for a significant amount of money most likely, he would expect a lot of minutes. Which would mean a center back rotation, which is not something I’m a huge fan of, especially as Dawson, as mentioned above, has been ridiculous recently, and this would likely take away from him- and Ricardo Rocha could be good as well, which would mean that four center backs would have to split time. Jol knows this wouldn’t work, so if Ruben Gonzalez is coming, someone else is going- my guess would be Rocha, if he doesn’t pick it up. (Anthony Gardner, who I haven’t mentioned, should probably be out regardless.)
I’ll be back tomorrow with a preview of Spurs’ away match against Braga in the UEFA Cup.

Hey, you’ve got the best defender in the league in Paul Stalteri. Why get another? Watch out for Keane’s maybe-departure for Aston Villa.
