The first signs of a new season.
By: Jay | July 6th, 2007
It’s not the Premiership but the Spurs are due to play their first pre-season friendly away at Stevenage Borough tomorrow. HURRAH!! A game, at long last. And record signing Darren Bent will be making his debut, but Bale and Kaboul will have to wait. It will be the first of a string of away matches including the Vodacom Cup in Africa. Pre-season training has started and the first fleeting glimpses of the new season are beginning to appear on the horizon. DOUBLE HURRAH!! with sauce and gravy.
We can’t, however, escape the fact we’re sitting right in the middle of the ’silly season’, and constant rumours surrounding our playing staff seems neverending. The squad seems pretty good to me though, and I can’t see many more changes being made except in midfield. I can’t say I’m entirely chuffed that Danny Murphy or Hossam Ghaly hasn’t left yet, as I’d like to bring in one brilliant central midfielder to show the likes of Jenas and Huddlestone how to develop. Zokora should improve after his first season and although different players, the fact is he has not replaced the hole left by Carrick.
The only other rumours I’m interested in are of those players of left-footed, midfield status, which is a little quiet for my liking. Brazilian winger Nene of Celta, in Spain, is the latest but nothing concrete as of yet. I’d rather be biting my nails over a nice long pursuit of a quality player of whom we all knew about, rather than a last-gasp poach of a relatively unproven player. We shall wait and see. As long as it’s not a Rasiak-style panic buy, I’m not staining my pants. Yet.
