Spurs Push Hard Vs United, Come Up Short
By: Richard | August 27th, 2007

Being on the west coast, I woke up at 7am Sunday to prepare for Spurs trip to Old Trafford. Four of my best friends and my brother were coming over to watch so I was going to make some breakfast, and scrambled eggs just happen to be the limit of my culinary acumen.
Speaking of scrambling and limits, Spurs brought both out in Manchester United yesterday. Unfortunately they also brought the same out in my friends and I. Pushed to the limits of frustration and feeling like our brains had been scrambled after the final whistle I’m left to contemplate yet another 1-0 loss at the Theatre of Dreams. If not for Nani’s dream shot that took a fortuitous curve off the head of Feral Boy from Road Warrior; AKA Carlos Tevez, the game would have no doubt ended in a draw. Even that result would have left me a bit empty though.
Spurs inability to work the ball into the box is what really spelled our doom. Spurs are still far too reliant upon Robinson’s booming kicks to get the ball forward. The only problem with this, as we saw yesterday, is that the ball is coming right down to the head of an opposing player. Jol’s conservative play on the road dictates such tactics, showing very little faith in his current pairing of center backs, Spurs eliminate any chance of Anthony Gardner or Ricardo Rocha making a game altering mistake by having Robinson send the ball over the top to our midfield, who looked completely overmatched yesterday against a superior United midfield… Time and time again Manchester United would regain possession as soon as the ball would come off of Robinson’s foot. As the game began to wind down Robinson began to throw the ball in and Spurs were able to work the ball down with short, efficient passes, but at that point Ferguson had his entire squad back defending making it difficult for Spurs to create space…. Too little too late for Jol and the boys for a tactic they should have adopted quite a bit sooner in the game.

Very frustrating loss. It seemed the good fortune did not fall on Spurs’ heads in this one. I felt we outplayed them and obviously had the better chances, one of which came after a non-call in the box. That being said…it was all too easy to forget the “not a shot on target” almost goal in the first minute. Corners were much better with Bale taking them, and at least Berb got a foot on a couple shots near goal. Overall, better performance than the first two games. More of a downer that Man. U. comes away with three than us not getting the one. They didn’t derserve three. No friggin’ way!

Man Utd were lucky. We created more clear-cut chances than they did. We can’t compensate for poor officials though, but the performance was good. We matched them in every area, except perhaps our midfield is still a bit lightweight. We needed the bite of Hargreaves… Still, we have further players to come back from injury, and lesser teams to play than United so it’s not all bad.
