Spurs miss out on Malouda
By: Jay | July 10th, 2007OK, so we were never really in the running to capture his signature, and now he’s gone to Chelski. It’s a shame because that’s exactly the sort of player I’d love to be at Spurs. A brilliant, pacey, technically gifted, professional, international left winger. *sigh*
On the plus side, this could mean that Shaun Wright-Phillips or Arjen Robben could be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge. And with Wayne Routledge and Hossam Ghaly linked to Birmingham City, we could do with a proper winger to bolster the left hand side. I’ve been thinking though, is Jol going to play 4-3-3 with his wealth of striking options? Even at 4-4-2, our choice of players to occupy that left midfield slot is Malbranque, Lennon, Taraabt, Tainio, Bale, maybe even Murphy or Keane. Perhaps Jol is not looking at this position as a problem. Perhaps our spending for the window is over. I hope not. Something is missing somewhere, not necessarily at left midfield, although we havn’t had a proper solution since David Ginola, but somewhere else. Maybe a central midfielder. I don’t know. But the big white puzzle isn’t complete yet. Bring on some random signing of an International player with real class that no one sees coming.

I’d love to see someone great sign out of left field, but all of our other transfers this year have been pretty well telegraphed months beforehand, so I don’t know why we’d start being sneaky about it now.
Robben, if he goes, will be in Madrid, so that’s out.
We (and everyone else) were linked with Royston Drenthe after the U-21s, and he could certainly do a job on the left. But I worry about MJ’s commitment to youth. Sometimes a bit of experience wouldn’t go amiss, and it would be great if we could attract some proven quality for the left wing rather than trying to bed in some starlet and keep our fingers crossed hoping he comes good.At center mid… Jenas/Zokora are just not good enough for a “Top 4″ side. Hud and Taarabt may well be the stars of tomorrow, but this season is going to be pretty make or break for us, and it would be nice if we could find a star of today (Sneijder) to give us some quality in the center of the pitch.
