Spurs 3 – Potters 1
By: Drew | January 27th, 2009
As I sit here in class I could barely hold my excitement in as I watched Tottenham smash 3 past Stoke in the first half. In a must win game we finally got the result that we needed.
Line up:
Cudicini (debut)
Corluka, Dawson, Woodgate, Assou-Ekotto
Lennon, Zokora, Modric, Bentley
Pavlyuchenko, Defoe
Subs: Alnwick, Bale, Campbell, Huddlestone, Rocha, Taraabt, Dos Santos
Domination would be an understatement for our performance in the first half. The first goal came from Aaron Lennon after only 7 minutes after Jermain Defoe fed him the ball in the box, he then drove it home with his left foot. The second goal came when Roman Pavlyuchenko played the ball into Defoe who rifled it into the back of the net from 14 yards out. And finally the third goal came when Luka Modric whipped in a cross that Michael Dawson met with his head and sent it into the back of the net. Besides the three goals I counted something like 5 other close chances.
After using all three of their subs Stoke city were able to nick one goal back from us. It came in the form of James Beattie who was able to cut his shot across Carlo Cudicini. But it was all for not, because in the end Spurs secured all three vital points.
Two great things about this game(other than the win) were getting to see Carlo get his first action in a Spurs shirt, as well as Harry’s tactical decisions to rest a lot of our starters against ManU, actually paying off. The 3 points we secured today will see us out of the relegation zone and should be a start to making our way up the table…hopefully.
Transfer rumors have also arisen linking Lyon’s Fred to spurs once again, since our talks with Kenwyne Jones have apparently ended with him signing a new contract with Sunderland. Talks of a swap for Dos Santos have even surfaced, but I don’t know how much truth their is to it. Personally I’d like to see Fred in a Spurs jersey, but I like Giovani and I think we should keep him around.
We play Bolton Wanderers on Saturday, and it’s definitely a game we can win, and one that we need to win. The losses by Pompey, Stoke and WBA today keep us out of relegation regardless of how the other teams below us perform tomorrow. Let’s take this win and build on it.

Some start, solid thereafter. You’re right to say Bolton’s winnable, would definately give spurs some momentum.

i agree with colin, hopefully the momentum from this game carries into bolton
by the way, does it seem that already Pav seems more comfortable with Defoe than Bent up top? they really look good playing off of each other, I love it

Shame we conceded that sloppy goal, would have been nice for Carlo to get a clean sheet on his debut. Defoe and Pav look real sexy together (no homo!) I really hope they can form a partnership like Berba/Keane.
As for the transfer rumours – personally I’m happy with the squad we have, I mean I don’t see where any other players would fit in, one thing we should have got though is another CB, with King done for the season (most likely), Woodgate with his back problems that leaves only Dawson and Corluka which is cutting it too close for comfort. I would have liked another CB but other than that I don’t think anyone else is necessary, the potential is there, it’s about achieving that potential.
Apparently ‘Arry is going to give Appiah his ultimatum today… Looking forward to it, personally I’d take him

Totally agreed about the squad Anthony, I’d rather keep Giovani around then trade him away for Fred. And the point about the CB, I think that’s why Harry bought Pascal. Not because he was on the top of our transfer targets, but because he is a decent defender and would be good cover in the back in case we lose one of our starters. This summer better see a signing of another Left back, and a left winger though. And considering Campbell will be going back to ManU we’ll need another striker. But we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.
