Spurs 0 – Everton 0: Not quite Enough…
By: Drew | May 9th, 2009
Today saw a confident display by Spurs, even without many of our regular starters, But it wasn’t enough to steal all 3 points from a very solid Everton side.
Missing Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Aaron Lennon, Wilson Palacios, and Darren Bent saw a much changed side from what we are used to in these past couple weeks.
The line up…
Gomes
Hutton, Woodgate, King, Corluka
Bale, Modric, Huddlestone, Jenas
Keane, Defoe
Tottenham looked the better side in the first half, applying pressure and opening up some opportunities. Of the replacements I’d say Defoe was solid as he always is (should start over bent), Bale was defensively sound and also delivered some great crosses, Huddlestone was mediocre, and Hutton was good at driving forward but it showed that he hasn’t played much this season, he looked exhausted.
David Moyes‘ side were very solid throughout the game, and there were some great battles all over the field. Leighton Baines and Steven Pienaar we’re both thorns in our side throughout the match.

The game saw very little chances in front of goal, Evertons Dan Gosling had a good volley in the 67th minute immediately followed by a great crack from Jermain Defoe at the other end.
So another point on our way to Europa league, And if you ask me it probably could have been 3. As the story goes this season we got off to a good start and then put it in neutral in the second half. If you’d asked me during the first half of the season if I’d be happy with a point away to Everton I’d have said “Of course” but after the display today I can’t help but have that distaste in my mouth.
If you missed it Setanta has an account of the game, and player rankings.

Any idea why Robbie Keane was wearing the armband with King playing?

Harry made him Team captain after he came back from the ‘pool.

We should have definitely taken this match but seemed to lack intensity after the half. We can probably kiss Europe good bye and this match was definitely the cause of it.

Formation was 5-3-2 with Hutton and Bale as the wing backs, not 4-4-2.
Gomes
Hutton–Corluka–Woodgate–King–Bale
Jenas–Huddlestone–Modric
Keane–DefoeWe were absolutely dominant for the first 30-35 minutes, failed to produce any goals from all that tidy possession in the Everton half, and then pretty much shut up shop for the rest of the match.
