Reader poll: Podolski, Cavenaghi, or Defoe?

By: Drew | January 3rd, 2009

It’s no secret that our Spurs side has been looking at bolstering our striking options, as currently Bent, Pavs, and Campbell are our only strikers. Giovani Dos Santos can also play wide forward, but is currently just recovering from an injury. Hopefully he can impress Harry as it’d be nice to add another name to the list. With the transfer window being open now, there have been a few names thrown around quite often when the press has been referring to the Spurs…

Originally it had seemed that Craig Bellamy was the first target on Harry Redknapp’s wishlist. But since Zola has apparently squashed the rumors of him selling his star striker, and ManCity also claiming to be interested, I can’t imagine it happening.

Firstly, current Germany and Bayern Munich striker Lukas Podolski has been linked with a possible move to North London. At 23 he has featured 60 times for his National team and scored 31 goals. Sadly he has struggled to find such form for Bayern, as he has been riding the bench for most of his time there. Only scoring 12 goals in 58 appearances. Prior to Bayern he played for FC Koln, Scoring 46 goals in 81 appearances. He’s also been linked to Roma, a slew of German clubs, and ManCity as well. On the bright side he’s been quoted as saying that Money wouldn’t be the primary decider in his choice. The way I look at it is he’s looking for more minutes on the pitch, and we’re looking for a striker to come in and lead the team with scoring. It seems like a good fit too me. Here is a bit of what he has to offer…

Secondly, a player who I have mentioned before, Fernando Cavenaghi. The super-sub has been feeling a little less than favored at Bordeaux this season while struggling to start many of the games. The Argentine started his career at River Plate scoring 55 goals in 89 appearances. He then moved to Spartak Moscow where he struggled to find his feet, only scoring 12 in 51 caps. The 25 year old currently plays his football in france for Bordeaux where he has scored 25 goals(yes 25!) in only 46 appearances. He seems to be a little back and forth on whether he wants to exit but if the offer was right and he had the opportunity to play alot of minutes(which we can offer) he’d probably come to Tottenham. I posted this before but its just too good…

Finally, A familiar face to most long time Spurs fans. Jermain Defoe has been linked to a move back to White Hart Lane. Following the departure of Redknapp from Pompey, Defoe has been less than excited about the current state of his team. He apparently has made it public that he wants to leave Tony Adams’ side and a move back to Spurs would be more than welcome by Harry. Jermain started his career at West Ham scoring 29 goals in 93 appearances. Defoe also spent a season on loan to Bournemouth while there he scored 18 goals in 29 appearances. In 2004 he made his first move to Spurs and was capped 139 times for the side, where he scored only 43 goals but was a fan favorite. Until last year he made a move to Pompey for 9 million and since has played 30 times for them and scored 14 goals. The only thing that has seemed to keep his second move to the Lane from happening has been the price Portsmouth put on him. Word on the street says Adams wants 20 million for him, and quite frankly we can get a whole hell of a lot more for that kind of money. Who knows though, maybe we’ll work out a deal…

So Who would you guys like to see come to North London?

I’d vote CavĂ© on principle, but chances are you probably won’t get your hands on him. Unless there’s a lot of money on the table, and then you may wait until summer :)

I’d love any of the three as long as we don’t get Bellamy. The whole Defoe thing just recently got a bit discouraging though as Redknapp said that Levy and Storrie are miles apart on their valuations of JD. As for Cavenaghi, I haven’t heard much development on the rumour or anything so I don’t really see it happening. It was more Ramos that was interested in him, I think ‘Arry would rather bring in English talent. Podolski would be an awesome signing, the boy is class. In several forums/facebook groups I’ve seen a lot of people calling him a “one trick pony” saying he only has a left peg and nothing else. Personally I highly rate him and the only reason he’s not playing at Bayern is because Toni and Schweinsteiger are on top form. He’d also provide speed up front, something Pav definitely doesn’t.

We still have a problem in that none of these three are strong target men. Maybe Pavlyuchenko is but we haven’t seen enough of him on form to know so. Remember, it did take Berba some time to adapt to the prem and if Pav adopts as well as Berba did then we may have a good partnership in him and Bent/one of these three (if acquired).

Only time will tell now. ‘Arry definitely knows what he’s doing. Let’s look ahead to Tuesday in the CC Semi’s against Burnley.

podolski is the only one that is really obtainable I think defoe they will keep raising the price and Cavenaghi just got an award for playing on the team so i doubt he will leave..I hope they bring in podolski so he can help us beat man u in the carling cup! He would be great pairing with pav up front

And oh yea since arsenal cant get the funds to get arshavin why dont we instead of spending 12m on downing and the 20m on defoe they are asking just by podolski for the 12 and arshavin for the 20! get some international players on there instead of some OKAY players..I like defoe but 20m is out of control he can stay there or go to villa.

1 Word - PODOLSKI - with out a doubt, theres no question about it,this kid is all talent & class,i say forget about Defoe ,Portsmouth is pbviously playing hard ball,if we increase the bid any more the price would be ridiculous,i honestly wouldn’t go past the 10 mil mark with him, Podolski would fit right into the squad & reason i say this is because i believe he would have the best partnership with PAV,i dont think Defoe would be as successfull with Pav,Im really hopeing Podolski ends up a Spur,Weve wanted Lucas for quite some time now & it would be wonderfull to see him playing at white heart lane..Champions league would come sooner then u think, with those 2 up front..

Lads I wouldn’t get too worried about your striking crisis and don’t start to rip in Redknapp about the lack of transfer activity.
You will be pleasantly surprised soon if all goes to plan.

Steer clear of Bellamy. Too much trouble.

Podolski? Yes. But he could so easily be another expensive flop.

If Dean Ashton could keep himself fit I’d love to see him at the Lane.

I don’t trust Cavenaghi…. he looks like a quality player, but I just have a personal thing against strikers with male pattern baldness in their mid-20’s

Personally, I would love to see Defoe come back to White Hart Lane, mostly because he’s a proven Premier League player who genuinely wishes to play for Spurs as well as the fact that he loves playing for Harry Redknapp

Most of all, I hope they stay away from Bellamy, because low goal-rate and anger issues aren’t what we need

Looks like defoe is back! by the way, the last line of the article is claiming that Stephen Appiah is on trial, and I love that… I think we need some REAL toughness in the midfield behind Modric, and I don’t really think Jenas does that for us, so getting a tough minded player in Appiah would be amazing for us
