Orlando Pirates 1 - 2 Tottenham Hotspur (Vodacom Challenge)
By: Jay | July 25th, 2007
Another good game, this time in Cape Town, where the Pirates gave the Spurs a good, entertaining game. A much changed side that played the Chiefs, Spurs welcomed back Younes Kaboul, who had a boot in the face early in the first match. The scorers for Tottenham were Darren Bent, again, and, Wayne Routledge (yes, he does still play for us). The Pirates, with star player Lebohang Mokoena, caused the defense a few problems, but ‘keeper for the day Radek Cerny had a good game.
The game had some good passing & attacking play from both sides. Kaboul, the strapping 6ft central defender, took a 30yard freekick at goal which slammed against the post having reduced the ‘keeper to a spectator. 5 minutes from time, Chimbonda gave away a penalty which led to a bizarre spectacle. Penalty first taken by Matema which was saved by Cerny, and then ordered to be taken again. This time Josephy Kamwendo took it, and was saved again! BUT, the ref ordered it to be taken yet again, and the same player managed to put it away this time. Blimey.
Match report can be found here.

I know, it was crazy. I believe the referee saw Cerny coming off his line, and that’s why it was asked to be retaken. Bit of a shame that Cerny didn’t learn from the first time because otherwise we wouldn’t have conceded. Additionally, it’s annoying that in a friendly tournament like this, the ref spots such infringements, yet in competitive matches it seems to go unnoticed!
