Looks like Jol found his Left Wing
By: Richard | August 29th, 2007
I’m so tired of talking about Spurs potential left wing transfer targets….I could write a list of at least 25 players who have been linked to Tottenham’s most glaring missing link… but I no longer have to! Ladies and gentlemen, your Tottenham Hotspur first choice left wing: Gareth Bale.
After Bale’s transfer, Jol had mentioned that he felt the move from fullback to wing would take place at some point, and when Spurs didn’t move for a wing and didn’t move one of their own full backs away it really raised the question in my mind as to where Bale would indeed play. Perhaps not the easiest of tasks for Bale, starting his Spurs career at Old Trafford but when the dust settled he looked great (even better considering his age). His free kicks looked sharp, as did his corners. He was knocked off the ball here and there but it’s safe to assume that will change with time as he grows stronger. Also, the pairing with YPL on the left looked solid from a defensive point of view as Man Utd had little success on that side (or the other for that matter, nice game Chimbo).
Now as we’re just a few weeks, at most, away from the return of Aaron Lennon we can look forward to seeing a midfield in action that might be able to work the flanks and cross the ball. Couple this with the space that will open up in the middle and it’s safe to say that the return of what promises to be truly beautiful football out of Tottenham Hotspur could be right around the corner.

True about Bale - though despite playing great I did’t see him actually go by anyone on the wing), but the news that Jenas will be with us for 5 years is a disaster. He is a natural tweener: too soft to play defensive midfield (where Zokora and Huddlestone are both better anyway), and not creative enough fro attacking midfield - when was the last time you saw him make a telling pass. Currently, he stands in the way of playing time for Boateng, Taarabt, and any other possible attacking midfield.
Good wingers are great, but spurs will not crack the top 4 until they have a player in that slot who competes with Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes, and Fabregas. Jenas is a long way from that.

No doubt. I am left clueless as to why he would be signed to a 5 year deal with Boateng yet to get on the pitch and Taarabt sitting there as well. Jenas is soft… I was at a Spurs site that had a poll where Jenas and Huddlestone were ranked as our top pick midfield combo. I love Tommy-Boy but I can’t say the same for Jenas. He embodies the style of soft, heartless play we have seen enough of the past few years. I want to see Boateng play! He’s supposed to be tough and we could use toughness…. As for Bale he may not have the pace to blow by defenders but a proper left foot on the left side can only help. COYS!!
