Kanoute: Could it happen?
By: Gary | May 27th, 2008
Sevilla striker Freddy Kanoute has put Premiership clubs on red alert, being reprted to have said, he is willing to quit the Spanish club if a serious offer comes in for his services.
Spurs, West Ham, Aston Villa and Bolton are all being linked with a possible move for the Malian striker.
But, could it really happen?
Could Freddy move for a double reunion?
Back at White Hart Lane and back with old boss Juande Ramos.
And, if it did happen, would it ever be the same?
Could he be our goal getter once more? Could there be such worry amongst the terraces as the Afrcan Cup of Nations approached? Could he recapture his fine Tottenham form he showed under then boss Glenn Hoddle, or would his return be merely a desperate attempt to reignite the old romantic flame between club and player?
When I first heard this ‘crazy’ transfer rumour, I could only laugh, but the more I think about it, the more I want it to happen, the more I want it to work.
Could Ramos get the best from Freddy once more, but this time in a Spurs shirt.
With Jermain Defoe sold to Portsmouth in January and Dimitar Berbatov also expected to head for the exit door this summer, there is certainly a demand for at least one new striker before next season, but could Kanoute be that man?
The answer is, it depends what Freddy we get back.
If we get the Freddy back who had the first touch of an angel, the Freddy who frightens defenders with his pace and the Freddy who is a great goalscorer as well as a scorer of great goals, then yes, of course it could happen. And, it would be beautiful.
But, is this just a dream?
Instead, we could get the Freddy who turns up when he feels like it, the Freddy who will not go down fighting and the Freddy who arrives for one last swan song.
Both scenarios are very strong possibilities. Kanoute has bags of quality and could relish life back in English football but he can also be a player of pure frustration too.
It is up to boss Juande Ramos whether he takes the risk or not, but I suspect there is a small part of every Spurs fan who would love to see the on form Freddy Kanoute return for a second spell at White Hart Lane.
