Jol on Hotseat
By: Richard | August 21st, 2007
Now for something I didn’t even want to touch yesterday:
Well, it’s safe to say that the tabloids have had nothing better to do over the past week then to write about the certain demise of one Martin Jol’s Tottenham Hotspur career. As the rumor goes Juande Ramos of Sevilla met with Spurs officials at a hotel in Spain (The dreaded hotel! Oh no!…. sounds more like a prostitution racket then a job interview). This rumor along with a spattering of Jurgen Klinsmann gossip had Jol dropping an F-bomb or two after Saturday’s demolition of Derby. By saying “I can’t f******* take criticism” Jol sounds like a man who’s up late at night worrying to me. Both Darren Bent and Robbie Keane have spoken in defense of Jol. While this kind of unity speaks volumes about how Jol is thought of amongst his players you can’t help but think that whatever is, or is not, going on there still seems to be a level of unrest.
Personally I can’t see Martin Jol going anywhere just yet. Sure, the start was a huge disappointment but to pull the trigger on Jol’s firing this early just doesn’t make sense. If the board was unhappy would it not have been more practical to fire him during the off-season and start the 07/08 campaign with a new boss, especially after the millions and millions that were dumped into the roster over the summer? Jol is going no where in the short term. As for the long term, results, as always, will dictate just how long he does stay. COYS!
Feel free to give your thoughts.

Jol SHOULD have a reason to worry because a managers role on a team is the same as a captain’s role on a ship. He sets the direction and the level of play. If the team is not inspired enough to play great for him… find someone who will inspire them.
I could probably have them 1-2 with a +1 GD at this spot in the season too with the teams they have played.
I am not saying its time to sack Jol, but what I am saying is that he is underperforming and should start getting the team to play more agressive ball.

Jol’s not going anywhere. Give the man a chance, and try not to get sucked in by a bit fat load of media bullsh*t surrounding the whole issue. If anything, this proves we are a big boy club now, and yes, there’s pressure but come on, Big Mart has given us 2 fifth place finishes in 2 full seasons. Why should anyone doubt he can achieve at least the same, if not better?

Jay, I agree 100%… I can’t see anything happening this season unless the team falls apart, and that’s a long way off.

[...] 8. Spurs luck is out. They dominated the game against Manchester United, and had two appeals for a penalty turned down. But they still lost and the clock keeps ticking for Martin Jol. [...]
