It’s a striker frenzy

By: Gary | June 25th, 2008

I think it is safe to say the British press are expecting a striker shake-up at White Hart Lane between now and the start of the new season.

The press are going wild with all the front man speculation at present.

There are reams of names being linked with a move in, and a whole clutch of clubs being reported as interested in either Dimitar Berbatov or Darren Bent.

David Villa, Lukas Podolski and Ruud Van Nistelrooy are amongst the most high profile names still being linked with a move to Spurs. Do we believe them? Podolski maybe after his recent Bayern Munich transfer request. But Villa or Van Nistelrooy I don’t think we have a hope in hell.

All these ludicrous rumours do is make us look more silly than we already do.

Plus, we may not even be in the hunt for a new attacker if we retain the services of Berb and Bent.

The move of Berb, is held in the hands of the players wishes while only Juande Ramos can decide whether he wants Bemnt on board next term.

The longer time goes on, the more I believe there is a chance Berbatov may still stay with us. It is obvious he wants a move and should an offer of Champions League football wade in, we will see the back of the Bulgarian in a rather sharpish fashion.

But I am unsure any club are willing to pay the price tag we have placed over his head. And secondly, with younger options now available for the top club managers – I think Berbatov is a rather less attractive proposition than he was 12 months ago.

Rumours have also suggested, Ramos may let the former Charlton man leave, with Sunderland and Everton looking like the most probably suitors.

I am not so sure we have firstly given him enough to prove whether he can be a successful signing, or secondly ,will either of the apparent chasing clubs be willing to pay enough for us to earn back some of the over-inflated cash we paid for his services just last summer.

These two deals hold the key for this striker frenzy to take off.

And, yes if even one of these players leave the club this summer, we will have to be in the hunt for a striker – but whether we can attract one of the top quality names being banded around, remains to be seen.

Unless the press know more about either Berbatov or Bent than we do, then I suspect our hunt for a striker is still in its infant stages.

After all, we have been in entrenched in troubled water of having four top strikers before.

It’s all well and good saying the rumours of us signing Villa, Van Nizzler and whoever else make us look silly but we didn’t start the bloody rumours! If the press insist on linking us to top quality players, we’re going to discuss said rumours and yes, in all likelihood relish such a prospect. After all would we not sound even more pathetic by dismissing these rumours as we feel we’re only a lowly team not worthy of such talented players? The media make the links, then when they don’t come off they tell it as if the player rebuffed us, rather than admit that there was no substance to their stories in the first place. Belive me I’d rather we be mocked as a club aiming possibly too high, than as a club with no ambition.

There is no shame in aiming for top players very true

but to continue to be linked with the top players makes us look very silly indeed. Yes, this is the medai’s fault. I am not blaming the club because as you say it is a great prospect.

I have never said Ramos has little ambition – quite the opposite

    Maybe

I think we have a chance for villa they were about to sign him in january..and podolski is very obtainable the only problem i see with him is that both keane and him up front would be rough cause they both aren’t that tall unless he has plans to put him on the wing or in the mid field like he plays in germany right now but on the other hand he said he wants to play as a striker so its gonna be an interesting july!!! I read the villa deal might be done but rumors are rumors and wishful thinking..

i highly doubt villa is coming, but i think that it may be likely that we get poldolski whether or not berbs stays on… he can play on the left, a position of need.

but berbatov is gone, that much is guaranteed. we will be better next year with or without him, so it doesnt trouble me at all. in fact, we could use the money, so i almost hope he goes.

I would love to see someone like Podolski at White Hart Lane. We need someone up front who’s got something to prove. I sense he has a little chip on his shoulder for barely playing at Bayern. He could be what we need to finish off games. How many times did we see Spurs become a complacent team last year when they had the lead? Some of those draws could turn into 3 points with Podolski up front.

it’ll be a shame if berbatov goes, if bent goes i dont think anybody will be too heartbroken because he’s not really on the same level as keane and berbatov when he’s at spurs but i think he would probably make a good player somewhere else (just like defoe did) he must be some good otherwise spurs wouldnt have payed £16m for him!
