Greetings, and a recap

By: Lucas | March 5th, 2007

Hello all, I’ll be representing Tottenham Hotspur here on The Offside, and I thought I’d open the writing with some talk about Sunday’s game against West Ham.
First of all, let me just say that that was as thrilling a soccer game as I’ve seen in a while- showing up, even, on ESPN’s Sportscenter, which I haven’t seen from a Premiership game since Arsenal-Chelsea, months ago. (See, America? You don’t need an angry bald man head butting people to make soccer interesting.) I am still hoarse today after shouting expletives at my TV throughout the first half, and screaming incoherently after Stalteri’s goal to win it. I absolutely loved what I saw from Spurs- the fightback, the second fightback, and, most importantly, the way that, despite folding many times under similar circumstances earlier in the season, they played tough with a much more physical opponent.

The turning point, for me, was Tom Huddlestone’s appearance after halftime- he adds a very physical element in the middle of the field, to go along with some very good passing. I loved Aaron Lennon’s contributions- how great was that flick to Taino for the second goal?- and I loved, on the other end, watching Carlos Tevez finally score, even though it was against my beloved Spurs. I wouldn’t have minded seeing the mandatory yellow card waved for his celebration- after the crap he has taken, you’ve got to allow him a moment of jubilation, even if his missed chance at the end of the game would have won it for the Hammers.

This was a very important win- up in the table, with sixth place potentially a win away, you have to love the way the team seems to be getting ready for the stretch run. Still in two cups, this could be the beginning of a fantastic run for Spurs- a famous upset at Chelsea in the FA Cup, and as good a chance as any against Braga starting this Thursday. Time, I suppose, will tell.

Hiya Lucas, let me tell you how glad I am that we’ve got a Spurs Offside. Tottenham is my team in England, and you could say you picked a swell time to start your blog :)
You can probably imagine how happy I was as a Canadian Spurs fan after that win… Count on me treating this blog like religious text! Oh, and I’m the Offsider for France and Toronto FC. That’s right, you can thank us for Assou-Ekoto, Zokora, and the wizard that is Adel Taarabt.

Finally someone to represent the broken hearts of Spurs fans as the Reds crush you repeatedly.

…eh, just kidding. Welcome to the blog! I’m the Kansas City Wizards (MLS) Offsider (but I’m also an avid Liverpool fan). It’s good to see some more representation in England!

Glad to see a Spurs blog on here, as a long-suffering fan.

I think you’re right that introducing Huddlestone was the key; we really need someone who can make incisive passes from the middle with Carrick gone. Huddlestone and Zokora could be a strong combination given Zokora makes up for Huddlestone’s lack of mobility, and Huddlestone can anchor the midfield while Zokora roams.
