Discussion: Spurs will finish above Arsenal because….
By: Jay | June 26th, 2007Raise your hand if you think Spurs will finish above Arsenal in the Premiership this season. My arm was raised by I must continue to type. I’m excited about this season.
The 06/07 campaign was a rollercoaster ride. One line summary: We should be delighted that we managed to finish 5th alongside lengthy cup runs in every competition. If our young contingent can mature into real stars then our future looks bright. Perhaps the odd experienced campaigner could help it along. Anyway, back to the main point, can we finish above you know who?
Even the most biased Gooner must admit a recent decline in all thing Arsenal. The loss of big players, uncertainty in the boardroom and the future of Mr. Wenger. However, I keep hearing their fans raving about their young stars. I think it would be naive to think that Arsenal won’t strengthen their side (Tevez and Anelka recently linked), so it’s certainly going to be a good fight. If our young charges such as Lennon, Huddlestone, Taraabt etc can really push on, and the more experienced players show the way, we can finish above Arsenal. Whilst we’re at it let’s see what Liverpool do in the transfer window and we can stick them with Arsenal too.
I sometimes wake up in cold sweat though, unhinged about our away form. If we can sort that out we will be a massive force, surely.
I am waiting for sacred words from the chosen one; Jol. He believes we are a side with potential, possibly challenging for the title in 2-3 seasons. Well, whatever your opinion you must admire the man for aiming high. It’s exactly what we need. COYS

I think the demise of Arsenal is a bit premature. As long as they have Wenger and Fabregas they will finish in the top 4. They still have Van Persie, Adebayor, and Kolo Toure, and youngsters like Diaby, Clichy, and Djourou will only get better next season. With the exit of Henry, it’s really going to be up to Gilberto to keep the kids in line. They’ll be fine and I’m afraid until the Spurs get some help defensively, they’ll still only finish fifth at best. They can sign all the strikers in the world, but if they can’t prevent their opponents from scoring I’m afraid they won’t be much better next season. Chimbonda goes forward too much, Ledley King can’t stay healthy, and Anthony Gardner has never impressed me. Michael Dawson should be better next season, which will help, but I don’t see Gareth Bale coming in next season and being the immediate answer. He’ll only be 18 when the season starts and he has no Premiership experience. It’ll take him a couple of years to develop into the kind of player everyone think’s he’ll become. I think having going into the season with such high expectations might end up hurting the Spurs more in the end.

As for my boys, we don’t need to do anything in the transfer window to improve our form, in my opinion. We’re not going to get any worse by not adding to a team that finished third in the league and went the CL final. A year together will only make us play better as a team and players like Kuyt and Pennant will only get better. We’ve added Voronin and strengthened our youth program significantly with the additions of Lucas, Sebastien Leto, and Kristian Nemeth, among others.
I hope your team doesn’t suffer from what I call the LFC syndrome, where everyone thinks the team is going to better than they actually end up being. We’ve suffered that the last couple of seasons, culminating in many picking us to win the league last season. What I’m afraid of is if we do sign a couple of big name players, it’ll happen all over again.

Interesting views Brian, and valid ones too. The problem with our defence is the casual mistakes and lapses in concentration. Ledley King and Michael Dawson are one of the strongest central defensive pairings in the country. Problems last season include: the fitness of King, the willingness of Chimbonda to attack and also the odd error from Robbo.
I must say I was never worried about Liverpool challenging for the title last season. How much did you pay for Pennant and Newcastle pay for Duff? Someone got their wires crossed there. However, I like D.Kuyt, and he will surely improve. As for this season, Liverpool’s current additions add little but it’s early, and we all know Rafa B wants to shop in La Liga, where the season has just ended.

I think our defensive woes are a little overblown at this point. Robbo had a tough year, that’s for sure, but after a shitty world cup and the disaster in croatia, i’m willing to cut him some slack. he looked back to his old self by the end of the season and came up with some huge saves in our last few games. Daws is only going to get better, gardner won’t be there next season, and even if King can’t get over his injury problems, kaboul and rocha will provide adequate cover. zokora will do a much better job protecting the back 4, and we finally have some depth at the fullback position which means we won’t have to see tanio or ifil playing fullback.
chimbonda still dicks around with the ball too much in our own half, and hopefully he can learn when to clear the ball instead of trying to dribble past people in our own box. other than that, our only defensive calamities come from set pieces and long range shots, which, and maybe i’m being optimistic here.. don’t really seem like insurmountable obstacles.
as for arsenal and liverpool, neither of them look really out of our reach. Pool’s a well organized team, but player for player… i’d only rather have stevie g, carragher, reina, and mascherano in place of spurs equivalents.
I don’t think arsenal are in as dire straits as some suggest, but an injury to cesc will effectively end their season. he’s the lynchpin of their entire side, just look how spurs handled le arse at the lane until cesc came on the pitch.

Oh dear God this post is a karmic nightmare! We start thinking positive thoughts and we’ll finish 13th, you watch.
I think this is overblown. Arsenal still finished well ahead of Spurs even functionally without Henry last season AND missing a lot of van Persie. Henry is going to hurt them, obviously, but for now it’s only one player and they are still a loaded Champions League team. If Wenger goes and the exodus starts, then we can start this up again.
As for us? Clearly a better team and one with confidence, but also will serious expectations now. Whatever our defensive problems were or weren’t, I will feel a whole hell of a lot better when we actually sign a new center-half. And for that matter, Darren Bent or anyone else. Right now we’re basically the same squad we had last year plus Bale, and while I love Bale, we have larger issues.
The good news is we have every right to challenge for a place and could very well take the Arse, the bad news is that’s exactly where we were this time last year as well.
