Discussion: Have we paid too much for Darren Bent?

By: Jay | June 29th, 2007

If you don’t know yet, Mr D.Bent has moved across London from Charlton to Tottenham. The price? A club record £16.5m. A fee higher than Thierry Henry commanded in a move to Barcelona. It dwarfs the the previous club transfer record of £11m which bought Sergei Rebrov.

Now, how did Charlton manage to haggle us up to such a figure when the teams concerned are not in direct competition being in different divisions, and yet Arsenal allowed their Captain, talisman and linchpin to another Champions League rival for a smaller fee?

I understand that Bent is younger and English, which is valuable to our side, but have we got value for money? At time of writing, we have 5 strikers, which will more likely to change to 4 eventually. Who will leave? And of those who stay, how many games will they split between them? How does Jol configure his forward line over the season? Will the boys rotate, or have a first and second choice pair?

My ultimate discussion point: Have we paid too much for Darren Bent?

Is it worth it if we lose Jermain Defoe for the same price? Is it worth it if we win a cup (I think Yes if this happens)? Is it worth it if we make the Champions League? What price a quality striker if Keane or Berba gets a long-term injury early-on in the season?

Fans of all clubs, football enthusiasts: Give me your thoughts.

It’s a debate that has split Spurs fans and football enthusiasts in general. Many think we have been utterly ripped off and Charlton were laughing all the way to the bank. Others are less worried. Me? Well, I have to look at the facts. I know he has pedigree in this league. How much is that worth? He’s fast, a clinical finisher, he doesn’t shy away from hard work, good in the air, strong and a team player. Is he at the same class as Berbatov. No. Maybe I’m putting too much thought into this - it’s pre-season, there’s little else to occupy me, and it’s early yet. One man doesn’t define a season(unless you’re Darren Bent and playing for Charlton), so we’ll see what other changes there are in the squad, if the team can gel in pre-season, get off to a good start, and the young players develop further.

In my heart? Yes. Honestly? Who really cares. We netted a guy who I think is complete class and will be an upgrade over Defoe, and it seems like Spurs is ever more a choice destination for players of Bent’s ilk. We probably could have waited out Charlton, but better to get the player and splash the cash. We’ll get good money from Defoe and Mido to make up for it.

i think we made the right move. it’s pointless to compare bent’s deal to henry’s- barca (yes, i despise henry) got a steal, and we overpaid a little. i don’t think henry is over the hill. i primarily said that to rub the salt in ar*enal’s still open wounds.

my hope is that mido finds a club who want him, and that defoe stays- and is happy about it. if defoe is going to have a bad attitude about it, i’d rather he move on.

my primary concern is that we pick up a left winger- it appears that there are multiple targets for us, we’ll see who we get.
