Defoe, Spurs Grab 3 Points, Beat City 2-1

After the Birmingham game last week my friend turned to me after the final whistle and said “I think the football gods are pissed at us.” This made me instantly think of all the points that had slipped through our fingers over the last few months: Sunderland (1pt), Fulham (2pts), Liverpool (2pts), Blackburn (1pt), West Ham (2pts), Birmingham (2pts) (I could be missing some). That’s ten points, give or take. Ten points that could have us right up at the top half of the table and within striking distance of an even higher spot.

Well, yesterday the football gods got a bit tired of punching each and every Spurs fan right in the groin. I’m not going to break down the game but I do want to summarize a few gut feelings I had:

1) We scored before the interval. Fuck yes! Now I was instantly wondering during half time if we can get another early in the second half or if City would equalize and send me to the medicine cabinet for some Tums.

2) Rolando Bianchi comes off the bench in the 58th minute and I just knew he would score. Bianchi scores three minutes later. I shake my head, cursing the football gods without saying a word.

3) Defoe comes on and I thought to myself “wouldn’t it be great if Defoe put Spurs back ahead?” A few minutes later Defoe put Spurs back ahead. Thank the football gods it was ahead to stay!!

Solid win for Spurs.

A Few Notes:
-Berbatov looked great and you can tell his confidence is coming back. It’s a shame that a few of his sweet passes didn’t turn into goals.

-Gareth Bale will be out at least 3 months… Great, just great.

Good, deserved win. It was about time Defoe scored. Still though, I think come winter we can sacrifice him and look into some center-backs.

It’s always great to see Defoe come in and score, but sadly I think I agree with Sam. Even better would be an actual holding midfielder, as much as I love our balls to the walls offense I think our midfield needs an established player to show the young guys how to be more effective. Hopefully this win will give them confidence against Portsmouth, sure to be a tough match this weekend.

Sam - The thing that has me worried is this: Should we sign Defoe we’ll have signed both Keane and Defoe to new contracts within the past six months, couple that with the purchase of Bent and suddenly Berbatov becomes the forward with the least amount of time left on his contract. I’m not saying he will go but Spurs fans need to be realistic. If we don’t make Europe (a cup win would be our only real hope at this point) then there might not be a need for four quality strikers…. ?

L’Americain - I can’t agree more. I’ve been thinking all year that the addition of quality central midfielders (both passing and holding) with European experience would have really pushed Spurs over the top. The board seems to be afraid to pull the trigger on older players who, after four or five years could only be sold for less then we paid. Instead they focus on young players who, with proper development, can be sold for a profit. This just irks me to no end. The team would stand to make a hell of a lot more money by qualifying for Champions League football, which they would have a better shot at with real class midfielders, then by buying a selling young players…? Do you guys seem to see that trend as well? I’d just love to see an upgrade there. 25 million spent on two world class players who can add leadership, experience and quality to the team will make a bigger impact then four 6 million pound youth players will ever make…. Just my opinion.
