Champions League To Be Short Lived?

By: Wes | May 9th, 2010

As expected Tottenham take an early 2-0 lead at Burnley, with their recent skill and execution on form. Then the wheels fell off, the glaring deficiencies at the front and the back reared their ugly heads and 4 Burnley goals later we have an exhibit of why Tottenham is a long shot to reach the group or knockout stages of Champions League play.

Somebody please jump on here and tell me I am crazy and the Spurs result today was merely knowing that Arsenal was going to finish 3rd and Spurs 4th, making the effort and result today meaningless.

it’s a bit of a short sighted article.
Despite losing on Sunday to Burnley,we still ended fourth, 3 points ahead of Man City, 6 points head of Aston Villa and 7 points ahead of Liverpool. When you ever seen Spurs in this position before?
We also have had a tough run of fixtures including an intense mid week encounter with Man City and then afew days later they had to travel north again to Burnley. Some of the players were also naturally tired. We also had some players missing including Gomes, Woodgate,Jenas,Kranjcar,Corluka all injured. As well as Keane,O’Hara and Hutton are all out on loan, so we were had few options rather than fielding a second tier team.King should not have been playing and he did not look as sharp as he usually does.It did not help that besides their fatigueness they probably were not as committed as some of their recent games.

No I don’t think Champions league football is a one off and Harry should have possibly given some of his fringe players a go i.e. Doug Livermore, Danny Rose and maybe one or two others.

Overall, Harry had nothing to lose and has delivered what he set out to do from the start of the season and overall he his done a terrific job this season and that is what counts.

I would also of late add, that we have had some very tough and intensive matches and unquestionably that would have ‘zapped’ alot of energy out of the players. We had to play Arsenal,Chelsea, Man Utd,Bolton and then Manchester City. Who would have predicted that we would pick up 12 points froma possible 15 points from those string of tough games alone? An amazing achievement when you think of where we have come from in the past.

In conclusion, we have missed out in the past on the final day of the season to qualify for Champions League football. What a sooving thought, that we had qualified for the Champions League BEFORE our last game of the season and we beat a team that was formidable competition.

SO let’s focus on what we have achieved rather than what we have not achieved.Burnley played well but they caught us on an off day, so now they think they are a great side? Come on,they under performed and hence why they are relegated and we beat them 5-0 earlier in the season!! Under Brian Laws they have only won three times, so he would be feeling like he has won a trophy considering whom he has beaten!! Furthermore, any team that plays in the Premiership has quality players but delivering quality football and winning , week in week out for 38 matches is what separates the great from mediocre teams.
This season it was the first time since 1962 that we have qualified for the Champions League and that alone is an amazing accomplishment.

Its unreasonable to judge Spurs’ chances of advancing in the CL based on this one game. What if the Chelsea game at the Lane was the final match of the season, how would you judge their chances then?

It was a bit tongue in cheek, my post, but one has to wonder if losing 4-2 to a team with suitcases packed for relegation is a ominous sign. Defoe clearly is not good enough up front to carry the scoring load, and there are a few gaps at the back that need plugging.

Colin, I completely agree…Spurs have accomplished a great deal this season. The consistency, style of play, and tremendous run at the end are something that has all Spurs fans excited moving forward. I just hope Sunday’s result was more of a hangover from celebrating the 4th place finish.

Yeah Colin…but we still didn’t have to roll over and play dead… &…it wasn’t even Xmas so why were we making them a present of it and why didn’t Harry let the likes of Danny Rose play is they were so ‘played out’ & tired…. oh! that’s right Capello’s man was there checking out the talent… well THAT sure gave a great example didn’t it. I still think Michael Dawson is a better bet than John Terry… also Tomm Huddlestone should be in midfield for Eng. Meanwhile I’m thinking good thoughts for our Qualifier.
