Blessing In Disguise?
By: Robert Reed | January 30th, 2013
A bloody good disguise, granted.
Depending on how you look at it we’ve been very lucky or very unlucky. We have not lost ground on Chelsea and have not had Arsenal close the gap, but at the same time we have let Everton close the gap to within a point.
On the other hand, you might say luck has nothing to do with it; that we played like a shower of sh..sugarlumps and on the evidence of our last two games will be finishing outside the top four.
One thing is for sure, this is a match that on paper we should have won
Trying hard to look on the bright side; this result and the fact Togo won their tie and are staying in the African Cup Of Nations could, just, be that blessing in disguise.
That’s one goal in nine games for Defoe, and Adebayor isn’t coming home just yet. Even Levy must be sitting there saying to himself, ‘hmm, I think we need another striker.’
Get on that phone Daniel!

My thoughts exactly, the game clearly show a lack of ‘focal point’. We definitely lack that number 9 at the minute, a great a poacher as Jermain is, he’s a form player and his form has definitely dipped lately, no goals in 8 is it now? So yeah come on Levy, cometh the hour.. dip into those deep pockets and guarantee us CL next year!! On a positive note, Holtby looks like one hell of a signing, totally changed the game, looks like a VDV with more than 60 minutes in him..

The reason Defoe isn’t scoring is because we are creating bugger all, any striker would struggle with the appalling service offered by our midfield.

Get a striker in now Mr Levy …….please. Otherwise I can see us throwing away our position in the top four…just like last year. Our priority at the start of the season should have been to go out and buy a 20-25 goal a season striker…..not the Gooner! Come on Daniel….get it sorted before it’s too late….PLEASE!!!!!

-

A little amendment needed to above. I think Levy should sign two new strikers. Defoe is always injured as of February til the end of the season so forget about him. Adebayor this season has never been fit and now the worst footballing display on earth ACN on top of that. We might as well disregard hom too. A decent investment has been overdue for Spurs strikeforce for a long while now and Levy must now show the same willingness of sacking managers who failed to achieve CL qualification and sign at least one or hopefully two strikers. Damiao,negredo,gomis…..dont want to read stories Mr Levy just want to see proper investment upfront.

This is what I have been thinking IB. People are saying we should not buy now as we need the money for a big name striker in the summer, but I maintain that we need a striker better than the ones we have now and then a world class striker in the summer for the CL campaign. If we don’t buy now and just save our money we will have plenty at the end of the season but won’t be able to attract anyone who costs that much as we won’t have a CL campaign. I fully expect Adebayor to be off come the end of the season anyway.

Magnificent strike from Bale. Also we looked downright dangerous with Holtby on the pitch. He better start against west brom

Obviously, not everyone is as bored of all this ’striker’ talk as I am. We ALL know how Levy does his business, usually at the last minute, so why do people keep going on and on about needing a bloody striker. WE ALL KNOW WE NEED A STRIKER, AND NO DOUBT LEVY DOES TOO!!!!
The Spurs supporters tonight were a credit to the club. Despite having every reason to moan, after what was an ABYSMAL first half showing, the away section of the crowd sang their hearts out throughout, doing the club proud when the players so painfully failed to.
God knows what Holtby must of been thinking as he warmed the bench, watching his new team-mates aimlessly lumping the ball forward to a lone striker who is no more than 5ft 9. To say it was reminiscent of the Crazy Gang (Wimbledon) at their very WORST is no understatement!
All over the pitch we were poor, with Clint Dempsey (arguably) the worst of the bunch. Failing to drop back into midfield to make up the numbers when out of possession, and completely ineffective when he did have the ball, Clints performance in that first half was symbolic of the inept display on show from a lacklustre Tottenham team.
I must say I was both amazed and disappointed by AVB’s decision NOT to change personnel at half-time, leaving it a further 25mins before bringing on the type of player the team was DESPERATELY in NEED of. To be fair, Spurs had improved in that time, but not by much!
The reason I highlighted the performance ( or lack of one) from Dempsey in particular was because you would of thought that with Holtby ready to take his place at the drop of a hat, that the American midfielder would have been doing EVERYTHING possible to maintain his place in the team. While his task was made EXTRA difficult by the display of his team-mates, the lack of real effort or fight in his showing was remarkable (but to be fair, the same could have been said about all those in white, apart from Walker and Parker, in the first half).
Anyway 70 mins had passed before AVB FINALLY introduced the considerable talents of Lewis Holtby, and boy did it make a BIG difference. Bright, eager and inventive, Holtby was everything we were lacking and more, which again makes me question exactly why he wasn’t summoned to the field sooner, if not at the break. The young German combined with his new team-mates almost effortlessly, giving Spurs the (quality) link between midfield and attack that has missing since the departure of VDV in the summer. In that 20 minute spell alone, I think he has done enough to suggest that he has already been earmarked for a spot in the side, for the visit to WBA on the weekend.
A point at Carrow road this season is no bad result in itself, this season, but it was the manner of the first half performance that ultimately prove most disturbing for all those connected with Tottenham Hotspur, tonight.
The blessing in disguise may very well be that these last two displays from the lads will convince Levy to go on a last minute shopping spree to ensure that Spurs hang on to their place amongst the top 4.

Well observed Ramos, particularly about Dempsey. The closing point you made at the end there; what position do you think needs strengthening?

Clearly we need a striker, but if we REALLY want to secure 3rd, instead of fourth, then we could do with a battling central midfielder to replace Sandro this season (and probably Parker next). I’ve always rated Diame at West ham, and for £3.5m, you can’t go wrong. Another player who could be secured for relatively cheap is Ever Banega, who is currently playing for cash-strapped Valencia. The signing of the Argentinian would send out a HUGE statement of intent from the club, as he is a truly world-class deep lying playmaker. Similar type to Modric, only more aggressive. He tends to sit deep and dictate, but he loves putting his foot in. Dream signing!
I also think we could with another out and out winger, as it appears that AVB doesn’t really fancy Townsend (who I believe looks like a player with bundles of potential).
A cheeky bid for Nani, Capel, Piatti, or Navas ( at Sevilla) would allow us to change/rest our current wide-men, without changing the team dynamic i.e. keep our width/ maintain balance.

Unfortunately we can’t go after depth at CM and out wide until we have more funds from Champions League. I’d think a guy like Negredo would be perfect and cheap. As for depth in the middle and on the wings… I’d prefer to wait until the summer.

It made me laugh when someone mentioned defoe cant do much without a decent service. Well mate i dont know what you have been watching but defoe tonight failed to score a one on one chance with a keeper. He missed a dozen one on ones in the last 6 games. At the moment hedoednt deserve his selection. Also i am not for a will do the job striker. Its very important to bring someone in with a good and proven record.
