Berbatov Saga rumbles on

By: Gary | June 15th, 2008

Just as the hype surrounding the future of Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov seemed to have died down, the Sunday tabloid newspapers today stoked the fire further with rumours Manchester United could be set to lure the Bulgarian away from White Hart Lane.

We all knew this summer’s main focal point was going to be whether Ramos managed to retain Berbatov’s Tottenham services. But today in the press we got a real eye-opener of the magnitude in which the ‘Great Berbativ Debate’ could escalate to, in the build-up to the new Premiership campaign.

It is understood that Sir Alex Ferguson is preparing a bumper bid to land the classy Bulgarian. And you wouldn’t blame the Red Devils boss for unleashing some transfer activity to detract attention away from their very own summer saga surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid.

I suspect United’s publicised interest could trigger more possible new employers to join the chase for the Spurs star in the coming weeks.

Reports say Spurs have given the front man until mid-July to decide his future. But, come on, does he really need that long? Is he staying or is he going? Does he want to be part of next season’s new look Tottenham, or not? It is as simple as that.

Why should we pander to him any longer? Why should we have to wait until a month before the new league season to see whether we ourselves need to be bolstered with the addition of a new striker?

I admit Dimitar is one very fine player. One of the finest to ever have graced the turf of White Hart Lane in fact. He is a genius with an irresistable swagger. A great goal scorer and a great creator too but we must not be left in limbo. And we must push for a decision.

If Berbatov does decide to leave the club, an outcome many fans believe to be inevitable then, we will miss him sorely, for that there is no doubt. But life must and will go on. The sooner we can draw a line under this ‘will he or won’t he’ saga, the better.

I would love to keep him at the Lane next season. He would be an asset to any club. But you cannot blame the man for chasing Champions League football.

But Berbatov must know by now if he wants to be at our club or not next season. It is time to shed some light on the situation.

I am afraid to say this transfer saga may just be beginning but already fans are growing sick.

It should be time for our season plans to begin. But surely they cannot start until the future of Dimitar is established.

The plot rumbles on…
