Baggies 2 – Spurs 0…
By: Drew | December 28th, 2008
Just about everything that could have gone wrong went wrong today as Tottenham went to WBA. With Luka Modric and Darren Bent both going down within the first 5 minutes I figured that we were gonna be in for a bumpy ride… Low and behold, I was right.
Now I’m going to make this review quick and painless, as I am sure all of you Spurs fans out there are probably feeling the exact same frustration that I am. So here it goes…
Our starting 11:
Gomes
Corluka, Woodgate, Dawson, Assou-Ekotto
Lennon, Zokora, Jenas, Bently
Modric
Bent
The first half saw fairly even possession, but very little opportunities by either side. The highlights being Dawson giving up a free kick on the edge of the box and getting a yellow card in the process for a clumsy challenge, When Corluka was clearly still in behind for coverage. Luckily for us Gomes was basically amazing today and made a great save to deny WBA’s Valero. And of course the big(or bigger of two) controversies in the match today saw Benoit Assou-Ekotto sent of for a challenge on Zuiverloon. It looked like he was trying to pull of the Zizzou like turn, but why the hell would he even try that? Either way, straight red. Spurs down to 10 men. Zokora dropped to left back, and Modric went to a more Center Mid, rather than Attacking Mid.
The second half was a bit more lively than the first with Gomes making 4 more saves to try and keep Spurs’ hope alive. Harry also subbed out Bently and put in O’hara at Left Mid, then subbed out Modric for Bale who moved to Left Mid, as O’hara moved into the middle, and finally Fraizer Campbell for Zakora, which dropped Bale back to Left Back. Confusing I know, but it seemed like Harry wanted to rest the players that played in the draw against Fulham on Friday.

The second of controversies came when Bednar looked to have pushed Dawson down in the box in order to head home WBA’s first goal. The goal stood, unlike any chance of us salvaging a point from this game. As 3 minutes into stoppage time Beattie slotted home the 2nd goal, or the last nail in the coffin, whichever way you wanna look at it.
Needless to say this was a game we needed to win, WBA is still 2 points below us, Blackburn need one win to be level with us, and Stoke, and Borough only need a draw to jump over us. It would seem that this is the last mistake we can afford to make because our next loss or draw could see us in the Relegation zone…again.
WE NEED A STRIKER WHO CAN FINISH!!!!!

That red card was as bad as his afro..I hope we get a striker or someone that can communicate..Modric lays in these nice balls and no one moves right way..I dont know how they can go and spend 15 on downing and not just pay the 15 for arshavin..STUPID! and defoe for another 15 they want to pay to get him back thats terrible..Left Winger and Striker thats all i want!!

I don’t think the offense was malicious or anything, like you said, he was trying a little Zizou 360 turn, unfortunately it didn’t work out. If anything the bullshit call was the one before when Bent clearly got bulldozed into the ground and a throw was given… I don’t understand. We’re in some serious shit boys, we need a proven prem striker in the January window because we’re lacking offensive power, BIG TIME. Also Bentley wasn’t bad last night but we definitely need a left winger, not Downing FFS, way overpriced. Also we need some cover at the back as we’ve seen the vulnerability there…
Roll on January…

I totally agree Anthony, Downing isn’t worth it. I keep reading that Redknapp is looking for another keeper for january, when i think getting another defender might be a better idea. Either way we need to just bite the bullet and realize that it’s gonna take some cash to get outta the grind we’re in right now.
