A Day To Forget
By: Jay | July 26th, 2007Tottenham fans can be forgiven for wearing a smile ear to ear at the moment. As the team is preparing for the upcoming season, the future’s bright, the future’s Lillywhite. BUT, today is a bad day. Long-term transfer target and potential saviour Martin Petrov WILL NOT be coming to Tottenham. The Bulgarian winger can be seen on the Manchester City website with a grin on his face. Why? I don’t know. I imagine new owner Thaksin Shinawatra’s millions are being put to good use creating the sort of pay deal that would make him shun European football with Spurs. Perhaps he doesn’t want glory, just money. Perhaps we’ve dodged a bullet. With all due respect to Man City, there’s more potential at The Lane than in the blue side of Manchester at the moment. My heart aches. I really wish we’d signed him. Petrov will be in City colours come the start of the new season, should he obtain his work permit. Further bad news is that he only cost £4.7m, which makes me scoff when I think about the current inflated transfer market surrounding the Premier League.
To make matters worse, we could face a double whammy if Mido decides not to join Birmingham City. In a bizarre switcharoo, Hossam Ghaly is now the closest of the 2 players to join City because Mido’s wage demands are too high. We were in a position where the money we got for flogging Mido would go straight to Atletico for Petrov. Now, Mido could stay and Petrov will not come. What a nightmare. Mido has recently stated that it is the clauses in the contracts for both him and Ghaly that is causing the problem. I imagine he probably wants a clause where he can eat what he likes and say what he likes, and Ghaly might have a problem with the ‘respect the club’ policy.

It’s gonna take me at least 24 hours to try and comprehend the situation, and try to work out where the Spurs will go from here. But we’ll get through it. Hopefully Commoli, Jol and Levy are eyeing up some talent as we speak…

God, if Mido doesn’t leave in the next week, I’m catching a plane to London and provoking an accident.
