Frustration on Many Levels – Spurs Yet to Kick into Gear
By: Richard | September 5th, 2007
The transfer window has finally closed without much fanfare. With that behind us every fan then can turn their attention to football itself. No more thin rumors regarding this defender or that winger, just football. Unfortunately we are Spurs fans and that means being rewarded with a draw at Fulham that felt more like a punch right to the balls.
I’m still having a bit of a problem knowing where to point the finger but I’m down to three theory’s as to why we didn’t notch our first away win of the season:
1. We are shit on set pieces so far. Should we get some blocks and strap them onto Chimbonda’s feet? Because he doesn’t look capable of getting more then two inches off the ground to deliver a proper header. I’m just happy Jol blasted the defense after the game. Simply put, they need to get their fingers out. We conceded too many goals last year and it showed in our record, so this year the best fix would have been to tighten up at the back. So far there’s been no improvement. I thought little Dutch boys were good at fixing leaks? Come on Martin. Figure this out.
2. Why did Jermaine Defoe come in? Keane was playing his best game of the young season, helping set up goals and linking up play nicely yet he was pulled in favor of Defoe for no apparent reason? I’ll put it like this: I like Defoe and feel he’s a nice player but when it comes down to it why was he put in last Saturday? Martin Jol, did you feel he would come right in and put another goal up? If so then that’s great, but if you put him in to appease the board by giving Defoe minutes with the hope that he then would be more inclined to sign a new deal in the future then you have gotten to the point of no return. Jol needs to manage games to win, not to please our fourth choice striker or our bumbling board of directors who have made our beloved Tottenham Hotspur a laughing stock over the past few weeks. Speaking of Defoe:
3. Let’s assume we brought in Defoe with the hopes of poaching a goal and sealing the victory for Spurs. I get that. Why then did we bring in Michael Dawson minutes later and turn to a game plan of defending with no offensive support for Berba and Defoe? The two man counterattack was unable to create any chances as the rest of the squad held back. We’re good going forward, that is Spurs strength, but if Jol thinks he can hold this team back to defend a lead he’s gone nuts.
Anyway, still bitter over the slow start. Let’s hope the international break gets the lads going in the right direction. Feel free to give us all your opinion. COYS!

1. Chimbonda’s got a great leap on him. That’s why every set piece is aimed at him.
2. We concede goals, but it’s because of the lightweight midfield, and playing 4th and 5th choice defenders.
3. Robbo needs a holiday. But a holiday with intense mental and physical training. So, a boot camp really.
4. It was weird subbing Keane whilst he was running riot, but Jol has promised Defoe some pitch-time in order to convince him to stay at the club beyond this season. He could have left so easily in the summer.

You missed a bit.
1) we couldn’t hold a lead last year even when King was playing. we play much too deep, allowing teams to get at our defenders easily, and they in turn are not good enough to handle the pressure. we also had some bad luck. But still.
2) Our midfield totally vanished in the last 20 minutes. Where were Jenas and Malbraue (whop by the way is showing no reason AT ALL why he should even be in the reserve team).
3) I agree on set pieces - we were crap on them last eyar too.
We should look at Aston Villa as an object lesson in holding a lead - tough defending all round, making it hard for Chelsea right at the half way line, great defending from Laursen, and counter-attacks in force. I don’t think their goalie even had much to do ni the second half.

Jay/Robin, I may have let my bitching get the best of me there. My use of the word defense wasn’t simply aimed at the back four but our team defense as whole….
Robin, Jenas was crap and failed to capitalize on the oportunities he did have but other then the little bit he did do he managed to do even less the rest of the time (good job Mr. New Contract), and Malbranque was just simply non-existant. Can’t wait for Lennon to return. Also, we do allow WAY too much space. The proof comes in the dozens of long range goals we concede.
Jay, Robbo is looking plump, no? Perhaps last seasons black, slimming goaltending kit was better for his frame… I’m no Cosmo writer but he’s looking a bit slow in the form fitting yellow… perhaps it’s too many battered sausages?

Well I think Robbo’s reflexes are second to none. What I have beef with is his positioning and footwork. For example, the third goal we conceded to Fulham - lobbed by an overhead kick. Basically, that shouldn’t happen. Had he been on his line it would have been a comfortable two-handed catch, or at the very least tipped over the bar. Also, remember that third goal we conceded to Everton - he didn’t even move!! He won’t save anything if he doesn’t move… and it wasn’t even far away!

I for one don’t think Robbo’s a bad keeper, he just is really, really, really unorthodox to say the least. He stops them, but he always makes me nervous with his bad positioning and weird saves.
On the plus side, I got my Berbatov shirt in the mail today! Woo!Posted from
