Quite a Year for Spurs Shirts
By: Richard | March 11th, 2008
It’s hard being a total sucker for football shirts. If anyone I know goes over seas I’m instantly giving them orders to pick me up some sort of football shirt. It reminds me a little of being a kid and opening a pack of Baseball cards. Once that bag is handed to me I’m not entirely sure if I’m going to get some ridiculous bootleg that was purchased from a street vendor like the Azzurri shirt my parents got me a couple years ago or the Inter Marco Materazzi shirt, straight from a Nike store in Italy that one of my best friends got me earlier this year (I follow AC Milan in the Serie A, so while that one wasn’t quite perfect for me it is a nice shirt). With another of my friends going to Scotland in a month I already have visions of Celtic or Rangers shirts dancing in my head!
As I was looking at my shirts the other day it had dawned upon me ‘Holy crap! Puma has taken me for four Spurs shirts this year! I’m even dumber then I thought!’ It’s not as if I’d be able to go a single year without grabbing a shirt for the season, and that’s where I started this years madness: one Dimitar Berbatov home shirt. Why could I not just have stopped there? No, I had to get the 125th Anni shirt… A shirt I’ve worn maybe three times. Hell, the home kits say 125th on them, so why would I need another shirt to commemorate the event? This is where they get you and rather then acting as a fan I start to function as a collector. Two shirts at about a hundred bucks a pop.
About a month ago I picked up a road kit for about forty dollars on Kitbag, and I’ve wore the hell out of it. Good buy. No complaints. Then we won the Carling Cup. So in a highly inebriated state I picked up a Carling Cup Final shirt with the Wembley printing, Carling Cup patches, and Woodgate on back. It was your classic drunk purchase made maybe an hour after the final whistle. I was living in the moment. I mean, it has been almost ten years since the last time Spurs raised a cup, so I got a little over excited and made it four shirts for 07/08.
I’m writing about this to publicly ridicule myself with the hopes of getting my shirt affliction under control. Four shirts in one year? I’ll be honest, this years shirts are pretty nice. They’re comfortable, unlike last years stiff fabric and the style looks nice as well, but not four shirts nice! If anyone knows of any help centers for football shirt addiction let me know. COYS!

Richard, I got away with one yellow away with “Keane” this year. Your shirt collection is fine. Maybe a bit excessive this year, but who cares? As far as the “drunken purchase” less than an hour after the Carling Cup dream…I’m sure you’re not alone! Probably the best of all of them! COYS!

No shame in buying so many, but no cure either! I’m a milan fan, but have bought the Tottenham away shirt because I think it’s beautiful. I’ll eventually have to get my hands on the home shirt, but there are others in line before that one.

Four Spurs shirts this year, a white away Paolo Maldini shirt after the CL win, the Inter home shirt as mentioned above and this years home Milan shirt…. I’ve also gotten into the habit of putting the names and numbers on myself. My road blue Spurs shirt now has Robbie Keane’s name and number on it and my Milan shirt now has Gattuso on it (that shirt demands a name and number on back though, or else it’s just a big blank red spot)… to be honest it’s pretty fun to apply the names and numbers myself…. So anyway, seven shirts in the past year, and I have to be honest, I’ve been eying this years AS Roma with Totti on back for months!

I couldn’t bring myself to buy the 2007-2008 Milan home jersey- I don’t like the amount of red vs black in it. I just HAD to get the away (Oddo 44) and third jersey (blank) to fill the void…
I also applied Gattuso 8 to my last generation Milan jersey- gave the shirt new life!
The Roma jerseys are NICE! Especially the black one they wear for the CL games.
The next jerseys I’m investing in will be Italian national team jerseys- Euro’s only 3 months away! Didn’t like the white away one at first, but it’s grown on me, and I had no choice but to get it. I’m really digging the blue one. Only difficult part is deciding whose name and number to put on.
Richard- have you ever started a thread related to shirt/scarf collecting?

had a chortle. Am in same boat. I was born in singapore and now live in Australia, and Spurs have a massive following both in Singapore and here (perth). Bought 24 spurs shirts in last 4 years (coinciding with Ebay’s expansion. Ken

Dave, I’m not really enamored by the 07/08 Milan kit either. There’s just an overload of red on it, and the black box on the front that houses the bwin logo just sucks. I’ll admit, it looks a ton better with the name and number on it though.
How do the 07/08 Roma shirts fit? It’s really hard to shell out 100 bucks on a shirt you can’t try on, as there are no soccer stores in my area that sell anything other then Adidas or Nike. I wear an XL, but should the shirt be really form fitting I don’t want to end up looking as if I’m going clubbing every time I wear it….
I bought my brother the white away Italy shirt for Christmas. He didn’t like it, I tried it and also wasn’t digging it. The new home shirt does look nice though! Perhaps with Pirlo on back? Not sure.
Ken,
Good to know there are crazy Spurs fans in Australia too! Gotta watch out with some of those eBay shirts, I know from experience that you get what you pay for!Posted from

Ken- 24 Spurs shirts in 4 years… wow. My entire collection is up to 22, about 18 of which have been procured over the past 3 years. The most I have for any single team is 5 (Milan.) Looks like I have a lot of catching up to do!
Richard- I don’t know how the Roma shirts fit, but they definitely LOOK like the fitted type. Kappa made the Italian jerseys for the ‘02 world cup, and those were a bit snug. Looked fine on them, but made me very self conscious… It looks like Kappa has kept the cut for the current Roma shirts.
As for the white nat’l team jersey, it only grew on me after seeing the team wearing them. The gold trim on and under the collar is a bit much for me. I prefer the simple, cleaner look of the previous jersey. My favorite nat’l team jersey up to this point is a 4-star black jersey w/ Pirlo 21 on it. It’s an authentic puma jersey I found on an ebay store in Portugal. Haven’t seen them play in the black jerseys, though…

Would probabally go for a few Bangkok rip offs mate. For a 100 bucks you could get around 200 shirts. 100% cotton at that. Still I’m sure Mr. Levy appreciates your loyalty and dedication.
